Knabstruppers, what can you tell me!?

Cedar Creek Stables is Melyni Worth, who is also the force behind Foxden Equine (makers of the indispensible Quiessence). I’ve met a number of Melyni’s horses, and they’re lovely. She breeds first for temperament, then for athleticism. Melyni is currently showing her own CCS Tinuvel at I1, well on their way to Grand Prix, and some have also been successful as eventers. There was a very nice article about her in the Chronicle in May. She winters at Bocoy Stables in Florida and a couple of her Knabstrubbers are shown on their Sales page.

Isn’t there a poster here that breeds them? Sonesta? Would that be Sonesta Farms?

That’s what I’ve been seeing. I don’t like the Appaloosa crosses because the two breeds are nothing alike except for the leopard pattern of spots. I like the older type of Knabstrupper. I think there were some crosses with TBs too but ya gotta get spots!

Flaebehoppen. That was the mare.

If you get one, OP, look for a Danish one that will be well-bred with breed-approved outcrosses (not Appaloosas!).

Well, I will say the Confetti horses are definitely sport horse types. It wouldn’t be like crossing with the Quarterloosas that ApHC promotes. Many of her horses are WB crosses.

I have two from Melyni (Cedar Creek Stables) and they are the Sport variety. Really wonderful horses, sane, smart, athletic and very hard working. We primarily event but mine have a full (older) brother going I1, close to GP, so they definitely are bred to do both. I train and ride my two myself since they were 3/4, as an experienced adult amateur, and it was very doable. I’m totally hooked on the breed.

If you are seriously looking, then don’t write off the ones in Canada. Import to the US is straightforward and if the listed price is in Canadian dollars you can subtract about 30% for the US equivalent right now.

I know every year at the Devon breed show there are a few in their breed class. Side story: my first year at the breed show, I excitedly spoke a text message to a friend, saying “There are KNABSTRUPPERS HERE!” The message she got was “There are nasty strippers here!”

Causing some confusion.

I just saw a really lovely mare for sale on Facebook CCS alyar. I only remember her name because i mistook it for alydar at first and i thought “how odd to name her after a TB”

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I’m not seriously looking right now, but hopefully will be in the next 5 years or so. I now ave a nice bookmarked folder of breeders and farms  I wouldn’t be opposed to a sporty Appaloosa at all, so that suggestion is also in there.

RHPSI have a Knabstrupper book.

The Westfalen NA offers studbooks for Warmbloods, German Riding Ponies, Knabstruppers, and Haflingers. The Warmblood book is open to mares and stallions from recognized Warmblood registries, as well as Thoroughbreds and Anglo-Arabians. Westfalen horses are bred for quality of movement, correctness of conformation and clear character. This foundation produces a superior athlete with high trainability and competitiveness for any of the sport horse disciplines.
