I’m pretty interested to see how this plays out - I haven’t seen something like this happen before.
I didn’t get a chance to watch the class, was anyone watching the live feed or there in person and have any thoughts?

I did not see the class but the rules are pretty clear about the timing of the rail down while the horse was still on course. Todd won.
I was there and saw the rail fall after she landed from jump eight (which was probably 30 seconds later). The wind was very strong, and a few jumps/poles had been blown down already. My guess is the horse had a lucky rub, but left the pole on the lip of the cup, leaving it more susceptible to being blown out by the wind. Even so, I was surprised that they gave her a clear, but even more surprised that they took it away!
Don’t you find it perplexing that they were more thorough in their investigation after TM requested an additional review?
In other sports where instant replay is available, the officials appear to exhaust that resource and then make a final decision. They don’t review the footage, make a call, and then, when questioned, say “Oh, okay, we’ll look more closely this time”.
Horse show management should have trusted the jumper judge the first time. Callan was not clean, Todd did have the only clean. To make the horses jump off, crown a winner and then strip it was very unprofessional. Callan was not even a fast four… Michael was bumped up to 2nd I believe.
My understanding is when a member of Callan’s team protested the four faults, the video was reviewed. The decision was made to declare it a clear round. Speculation is there may have been some bias, based on the fact that certain supporters of Callan are also big supporters of The Lake Placid Horse Show.
Todd stated that he would go ahead and jump off but that he wanted to view the video tape himself after he rode.
Todd had the first rail and Callan went clean and was declared the winner.
Todd collected a group of people and they watched the video. Since the horse obviously touched the rail, the rule was enforced that it a rail falls at anytime prior to the entry leaving the ring it is 4 faults.
Todd declared the winner.
Todd shouldn’t have agreed to the jump off if he was going to protest the original 4 faults.
Disagree. Todd was covering all bases. They had to decide quickly to jump off or not it appears. This isn’t Todd’s first rodeo and he knows the rules. And of course, the rules were in his favor. Callan is also a great competitor, but this time as unfair as it may seem, it was a freak situation and the rules had to be followed. Strange things can happen in the jumper ring. I suspect this will now become a discussion session at upcoming jumper judge clinics

I had the exact same thought. Add this video to the oddity collection.
Interesting…I find it odd they changed her score to a clear round in the first place but it seems all was settled the right way in the end. Kind of exciting, you don’t see many instant replays and such in the horse world :P!
Instant video replay has been part of the jumper world for number of years now. Most often it is settled pretty quickly. Wind situations are never the judges friend, whether it is with the jumps or dealing with judges cards and course charts blowing around. This may or may not have been what they ere dealing with. but
it is always a pain that affects many aspects of the class.
