At least 8’ (prefer 10) cotton rope with bolt/trigger snap.
Solid brass snap if possible.
HateHateHate bullsnaps
I like the longer cotton lead ropes with a bull snap.
I learned to like bull snaps when I boarded at a lesson barn and the lesson kids would grab the first lead rope they could find to take their lesson horse over to the cross ties to groom. The lesson kids hated bull snaps so having a lead with a bull snap on my horse’s stall, hooked to his halter (also hanging on the front of the stall) meant my halter and lead were there when I needed it.
I no longer board and I have a variety of leads but my old cotton leads with the bull snaps seem to outlast anything.
They are one of those things that once you learn to do them with one hand they are easy. Though I totally get why some people hate them.
8 ft COTTON. Have you ever had a horse pull Nylon thru your bare hands? I got a bad Rope burn from that. From then on, got rid of all my Nylon leads.
I thought that is what opposable thumbs were for, so we can open bullsnaps one handed.
for me the ideal is:
- 10-12' long (can hang over a horse's back while grazing without slipping, good for ground work, long enough to hold onto if a horse rears)
- Yacht rope (smooth, good 'hand", won't snag or collect burrs, stays cleaner)
- SOLID brass snap (will break under pressure)
- Trigger snap (one handed operation)
- Braided in snap (not clamped or glued)
- leather popper end (groundwork)
Is it better to have a chromed metal snap or a brass one? Brass doesn’t rust but it breaks more easily.
I like longer lead ropes and usually just buy rope from home depot and a snap. Cheap and easy!
Definitely yacht braid - my husband makes them with a good sturdy trigger clip. They are easy on the hands and wash up like new after they have dropped onto the trailer floor that the horse has just peed on. I have them in any length I want. He’s an old fisherman and has the skills.
Cotton or Nylon makes no difference to me. The snap is the important thing. I hate those bull snaps. I can’t get a hold on them.
Just like this but a little longer, at least 10’ and a rope halter.
Nylon or leather, 6’-8’ lead rope with trigger snap, no chain.
Hate cotton lead ropes,…
Intek used to make these awesome thick mostly cotton 10-12’ lead lines. They are long enough for me to put a couple of permanent knots in them and if the line slips through my hand it does not hurt. I will not do nylon or leather with my arthritic weak hands.
I have a small stash but would buy more if I could find them. They last a LONG time.
My fav is a 12’ cotton yacht rope type, bull snap & leather popper on the end. Yes, it came with a level 1 parelli kit:no:, but it’s almost 20 yrs old & used regularly! No one else at my barn likes the bull snap, so no fear of it disappearing!!
Yacht line, brass trigger snap braided in, 10’ or so length.
I like bull snaps. As long as you grab them by the back and push open using a pinch, they are one handed. And there is nothing hanging out to catch a horse’s face when they get stupid. They are normally on cotton least ropes too, and I like cotton.
