LeMieux: Merino vs Lambskin?

I’m looking at LeMieux halfpads (well, their pads in general. Drool!) but can’t figure out the difference between the merino and lambskin options.

Is one thicker/stiffer? More/less durable? Better for daily use vs better for showing?

I fell in love with one I handled a while back, but cannot remember if it was merino or lambskin. Oops!

The difference between merino and sheepskin is that sheepskin is still attached to the hide, and lambskin is just younger sheep so probably its softer/fluffier?

OP, did you get one? I’m in the same boat!

I thought that Merino was just a type of sheep/wool, but perhaps I am incorrect.

I have a half pad from them, I am unsure what kind it is, but it is lovely. I also have the Pro Sport Euro Jump pad. I love their pads because they seem to contour and fit in the right places. They also fit my 17.5 saddle with a more forward flap well. I have not been disappointed with any of their products so far.

Haven’t yet, but am leaning towards the lambskin. I don’t need extra bulk, and it sounds like the lambskin compresses easier to a thinner profile, so should suit my needs better. Definitely going for brown no matter what! Swoon!

You are correct. In purely technical terms, something could be both Merino and lambskin - it would just have to be a Merino lamb. This does appear to be the case with the LeMieux pads. The “Lambskin” pads are made from Merino lambs with the skin still attached; the “Merino” pads are also made from Merino lambs - but just the wool, not the skin.

So the merino pads would be something like felt or woven material, rather than “sheepskin”?

It’s still merino wool material, it’s just not attached to the hide.

I have a Lemieux pad, a merino pad. The merino pad is just the wool, no skin attached (which technically means that the lamb/sheep that produced the wool was not necessarily slaughtered).

It’s a lovely pad, and I believe that it may not be quite as thick as the lambskin pad. The wool itself is very thick. It’s wonderful.
