Lets talk about George Morris

With apologies for the self-promotion, and on the chance that the world of people who follow the Chronicle’s forums is not entirely the same as the world of people who follow the Chronicle’s blogs, I wrote more than a few words about my experiences as a non-rider attending George Morris clinics here:

I did read and enjoyed, when the Chronicle had it on the website front “page”.

It’s always fun to read people’s take, on George.

What I love the most is that all he cares about is the horse. He doesn’t care about hurting your feelings because the only thing that matters is if the horse is being treated fairly and ridden well.

Thirty five years ago, Mr. Morris asked me - loudly, and politely, to get out of his student’s way in the schooling area - so they could have the jumps to themselves. It hurt my 12 year old feelings, but after his student came out of the ring, he came back to the schooling arena, hollered at me to come down over the line, told me to sit back 10 degrees and turn my thumbs up, come down again, and one more time … now you’re ready … and then he walked away. Never asked my name, didn’t wait for me to say thank you. I’m sure he forget me before he got 25 feet away, but I have never forgotten. What a strange thing to do, to tell a kid you don’t know to get out of your way, then come back and help her (he must have felt sorry for me, being a rube wandering around the schooling area with no help and really no clue).

BTW, I have a program from the Devon Horse Show from the early 1980’s with George on the cover. If memory serves, he’s riding a 4’ horse, and he’s wearing rust breeches, a tweed jacket and brown aviator shades.

I loved, loved, LOVED his commentary on the live feed of the Maclay finals this year. Listening to his thoughts on the action felt like getting to audit one of his clinics, for free, from the couch. :)[/QUOTE]

Me too! Why are those kids coming off their horses so easy?

He’s clearly a big fan of using TB’s vs WB’s when possible.

Loved hearing the comments during the finals. Very instructive.
