ROFL, my free horse is showing in an AA show next week and now I am even more of a nervous wreck about it after reading this thread.

The price I heard bandied about for Rumba was 700K; I have absolutely no idea if that’s true or not, but that was the rumor when he was first sold, I kinda doubt that it was higher. That horse is the very definition of Ammy friendly. Given the rest of the prices in hunter land, I don’t think that was outrageous for a top of the line, multiple Derby winner that also can do the Children’s and look happy doing it.
I don’t doubt that there’s been a 7 figure hunter, I just don’t have the insider information to know who it was.
I also think that the previous poster’s comment about the cost of campaigning was spot on. People who are outraged by the cost of a good hunter with legit A mileage need to understand exactly what it costs to give a horse that mileage. Can you recoup that cost on most horses? No, that’s why hunters are not an investment. If you get a Rumba or a Jersey Boy or an Invincible, yes, trainers try to recoup the cost of producing THAT HORSE and the previous 5 that didn’t finish up that well.
I always wondered what Rumba’s selling price was. I recently read an article published in 2010 that stated his selling price at $650,000. My question is where is Rumba now? I would love to see him with John French aboard compete against Jersey Boy!
Last I knew, Rumba was cleaning up in the Children’s with Destry Spielberg. I suspect at some point she’ll move up to the Juniors with him. There’s videos of them on YouTube, and they are pretty darn appealing. As a judge, I’d be tempted to give that horse all the ribbons, call it a day and go home.

Me too! Me too! Or marriage, or sons to marry off!.
Sons, daughters…for that much money I may change teams.

Destry moved up to the juniors quite some time ago. According to USEF, the last time Destry showed him was at the HITS Desert Circuit V in February-March 2012. He was Circuit Champion Large Junior Hunter 15-under for the entire HITS Desert Circuit.

She showed him at WIHS too, I remember seeing them. They got some nice ribbons there in the Juniors, IIRC. It looks like she’s still showing–under the ownership Rumba’s listed under, there are other horses she’s been showing in the Junior Jumpers and the big eq divisions. Maybe she’s just not interested in doing the hunters anymore? It’s not as if the horse needs to prove himself any further.

I don’t think anyone would let a horse of that quality just sit around! She has a small junior that she still shows, and did indoors on last year (Illusion), I think Rumba got hurt and that’s why he’s not showing.
