Looking for a Nice TB - Where to Begin?

I got a comment like this last night! Some snow slid off the roof yesterday and the two ottbs plodded along while the other horses were spinning and spooking.

OP - I’d also check out some eventer groups on facebook. I think I’ve seen a number of ottbs posted on Major League Eventers down in Ocala for the season. I bet Area III has their own page too, I know Area II does. Might not be the refined and ready to go you’re looking for, but likely going 2-2’6"

Virginia. I advertised heavily on Facebook and on several local websites. He’s a good horse, just needs equioxx because he’s 15 now, not even a hard keeper.
I had 2 people come out, one had a daughter who had never ridden before, the other was a girl who was afraid of his height (he’s 17.2).
I actually pretty much gave up. Then my fabulous leaser contacted me, and he’s been with her and getting lots of love and winning in the h/j ring for the past year. She came from an eventing and dressage background, which is why I think she didn’t care that he was an OTTB. Everyone else skipped him because of his breeding.

I wonder if you would have different luck now? He sounds like what literally everyone is looking for, and in my area OTTBs are starting at low 5s as long as they are sound, sane, and jumping small courses.

I really was not trying to derail or stir the pot - just that this is a thread about shopping for TBs and therefore it was reminding me of how often I see the “warmblood-like” descriptions. It was a generalization about shopping for TBs and not directed at any poster in this thread or otherwise.

I know there is a TB division at WEC and I have to believe some of them are sale horses. At least it would give you a sense of what is out there and how they are priced when already jumping around 3’.

I misunderstood! (And definitely agree with your point.)

I’m not sure, he was advertised during the summer of 2020 and it was a hot market. Have OTTB prices raised significantly in the past year? I haven’t really seen that reflected in sales prices around here.

My very layman’s observation - having been shopping for in summer 2020 and now shoppping again, looking at, but not exclusive, OTTBs both times - is that last summer horses we’re going incredibly fast but prices were just starting to elevate. Now prices seem to be overall, across the board much higher (including OTTBs) and horses are still flying off the shelves so to speak.

I agree/have had this same observation. My OTTB was bought in spring 2020. If he were in the same condition, same position but in 2022–he’d probably have an additional 8-10k tacked onto him.

Thanks for this! There are some great looking prospects on that page and I will check back periodically. My current TB is super quiet and sane, he just isn’t up to the level of jumping I want to get to. I am at a point in my riding career (and also middle age LOL) where I have put in my time with the greenies and looking for something that has a good base and has at least been around the show ring and proving itself at the low level.

I have nothing helpful to add except commiseration. I’m in the same boat - I’m looking for one I can confidently step into the show ring with, with quality and scope for at least 3’3”. I’ve done the green horse thing before and want to buy something ready this go-round. I thought I had the budget for it (mid/low 5 figures) but I’ve been looking since August and still nothing.

I look at Benchmark and Hound Run multiple times a week, and keep reminding myself I don’t want to do so green again… Gets harder thinking about how far along they’d be now if I’d bought one in August!
