Losing my motivation??

I think we need to realize that increasing age affects so many aspects of our lives. I have had horses for 43 years now and while I love my horses the same as I did at 12, things have changed.

I definitely have become a “fairer weather rider”. I am out to feed , clean and care for them 365 with no problem, but ride in cold weather? Up until a few years ago I would ride no matter what the weather as long as the footing was good. Not anymore.

That is ok.

I understand this completely. I wonder if There is a forum for aging athletes…body changes, attitudes changing, etc. I used to be first in/last out at the barn. Now I have to really get a grip to just show up. Trying to ride enough to keep a senior horse in good condition, maybe 4 x a week

If you have any interest try clicker training. The “pressure” to comply is way lower, which means that an uncomfortable horse will decline (and is allowed to decline) if it’s too painful. And because the horse is given a voice he’ll tell you what he’s comfortable doing, and what he’s not. Horses love it, and it’s challenging enough for trainers that learning how to do it can be both engaging, and humbling.
