Loss of appetite in senior dog...

He’s got an appt this afternoon. :).

I did did get to town this morning and got a couple small bags of different foods, in case it does turn out he’s just bored with the same old same old. He ate a cup of one of them around lunchtime, with gusto. So, IDK. fingers crossed!

Vet thinks he’s basically ok, wants us to try some canned food. If no change or gets pickier, will do further diagnostics.

Just adding to the suggestions. I’ve got an uber picky one, although a bit younger. Honest Kitchen dehydrated foods have by far been her favorite. She actually wags before meals and finishes the whole meal instead of bites throughout the day. It’s human grade food, and the price reflects it. They’ve got a few different options, grain-free, fish, whole grains, etc… You do need to add water before hand, and I usually add warm water to mine just for spoils.

The up side is that you can order online if your local food place doesn’t carry, and you can also order sample to try online to see if your guy will eat it.

Lol yeah I know its crappy food. Not to happy about it but didn’t have a lot of options.

Bloodwork was 6-8 weeks ago.
It isn’t just crappy its dangerous. Should have been recalled a couple years back as dogs had died.

Please don’t feed that to anything.

Haven’t read the whole thread but on top of vet check if all is clear then try fish oil on a decent kibble. Most dogs love it.

Even better would be dehydrated (Honest Kitchen is very good).

Well it seems my chow hound is back! A little canned food added to a different dry food (NOT Beneful!) has made all the difference. He’s cleaning up everything and looking for more, lol.

Great ! Happy Thanksgiving to ALL your “Big Eaters” !

Spoil the dear dog - but bear in mind that eventually things start to shut down.
That’s what my vet told me a while back.

Find a local pet store that has tripett- it’s a canned green tripe product that stinks about as bad as horse poop and “what dead thing did you roll in” combined and is really excellent at getting them eating. I have Great Danes who are picky eaters so I feel your pain!

Sad to update, we had him euthanized yesterday. He went off his feed again, which we could have done further diagnostics etc for…but he had gotten so stiff and wonky in the legs that he was having much more trouble getting around…in addition to being mostly deaf and drastically declined vision. It was just time and he went peacefully here at home, on the couch with his head in my lap.

i miss him horribly. He was the epitome of GOOD dog. I am confident it was the right decision, but my heart…:frowning:

I am sorry you had to make that difficult decision. RIP good boy. I know how you feel, I lost my good mare 4 weeks ago to colic. Damn it hurts your heart even when you know it is the only option.

One of my vets, in order to perk up appetite in an old dog or sick dog, recommended Vanilla Ensure, French Vanilla whole milk yogurt, scrambled eggs, human food esp partially cooked hamberger or sauteed chicken. Also take the whole milk vanilla yougurt and freeze it in small cups.
I have done the french vanilla yogurt (activia) and the scrambled eggs. He really likes scrambled eggs mixed with a little brown rice and rotisserie chicken (no skin) on kibble. Routinely I microwave his meals a.m. and p.m. Yeah, I know.

I am so sorry. I did not see your update. I will remove my post if you prefer. Thinking of you.

Sorry to hear that - but you were obviously the best dog mum and he was well loved and had a great life It was time.

Thanks guys. he was really the best :frowning:

Accidental Buckaroo, it’s kind of you to offer, but no need to remove your post. It’s good advice :). He was eating a lot of people food the last few days!

I am so very sorry for your loss. HUGS.

Very sorry but glad to hear he was eating well after the initial problems. Hugs to you.

OP sorry for your loss.

I opened this thread because my 15 year old Labbie has been finicky off and on for about 4 months now… another dog who never turned her nose up at anything loosely considered edible by dogs. Also like yours she is the epitome of ‘Good Dog’.

Interestingly, for some reason I had samples of Beneful canned here, knew it was crap, and in desperation tried it. She loves it. Gag!
I’ve been making her special, multiple small meals daily for months now… sometimes the regular canned food made into a soup with her regular kibble added works… other days she only gets interested when I add a nice bit of low salt chicken stock… other days not much tempts her.
It’s not fun… she’s presently gone back to ‘no thanks’ and it’s so hard.

I am so sorry you lost your friend. Like you, I know Emma is on borrowed time, and am willing to stretch my limits of what are acceptable if it means she eats and stick around a bit longer.

I have a 16 1/2 yo who has always had a sensitive system. She is currently getting dry 4-Health, canned 4-Health mixed with dry cat food (yes you read that right), and dry cat food. At this point, I figure whatever she wants to eat from day to day is fine with me.

I missed the update as well. I’m so sorry!! I lost my other 16 yo a couple of months ago and it is sad without her smiling face. Hugs!
