Lost In The Fog: Feb 2002 - Sep 2006; godspeed to you!

I watched the video and the sickening feeling of the sprint at Belmont with the Breeders’ Cup returned all over again.

Although from what I read, in advance, Russ was under instructions not to push him hard. I suspect (could be wrong and it isn’t sour grapes) that he could’ve pushed him like heck in the final stretch to won; however Russ elected not to squeeze him hard to accomplish that. It likely would have resulted in them set back significantly before the next race, likely a graded one.

You see LITF drop several lengths in the stretch behind Carthage but then appear to surge and close it somewhat but by then Baze was throtteling him down as they were assured of 2nd place.

As I cited from articles above in the last few days, Greg and Harry both were talking as if this was very potentially going to be a loss from the outset.

I still like him regardless

Baze Synopsis of Race

Here’s a brief race description from Baze as quoted in the AP article:

“I had a ton of horse down the backside,” said Lost in the Fog’s rider, Russell Baze. “But when he switched leads on the turn, the track came away from him and he was slipping. He got a little tired the last sixteenth of a mile.”

racing like the old days

It is good to see such a crowd at a bay area track. just like last time he ran. folks were there with their kids holding them up on their shoulders so they could see him.

and my partner got 9-5 on Carthage (who had two 100+ Beyers in his last two races. . .)

and several bobble head dolls!

Fog could start next on turf, in Texas

The Fog could find way to Lone Star

GRAND PRAIRIE, TX - Lost In The Fog, last year’s champion sprinter and one of the country’s most popular racehorses, could make his next start at Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie.

His trainer, Greg Gilchrist, nominated Lost In The Fog to the $100,000 Beck Auto Group Turf Sprint, one of the six stakes run on Lone Star Million Day on May 29. Gilchrist, whose stable is based in Northern California, said he would also like to bring Victorina, a stakes-winning filly, for the $100,000 Stonerside Stakes.

“Right now, it’s a little better than 50-50,” Gilchrist said, explaining the Fog’s chances of rolling into Texas. Gilchrist said he would wait until the weight assignments are announced next weekend before making a final decision.

“We’ve always wanted to find a grass race for this horse [Lost In The Fog],” Gilchrist said, “and this race at Lone Star would fit nicely in his schedule.”

Lost In The Fog never has raced on turf. But, Gilchrist pointed out, the horse’s breeding suggests he should like the surface. Lost In The Fog is a son of Lost Soldier, a multiple stakes winner who was probably most effective on turf. Lost Soldier finished second at Lone Star in the inaugural Dallas Turf Cup in 1997.

Lost In The Fog has won 10 of his 12 starts.

Skip Texas - here comes Kentucky!

A good way to prep for the Breeders’ Cup (which will be held at Churchill this year) is to race him now at the famed track in the G-3 Aristides!

Lost in the Fog off to Churchill
By CHUCK DYBDAL
Daily Racing Forum May 23, 2006

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Lost in the Fog, last year’s Eclipse sprint champion, will make his next start at Churchill Downs in the Grade 3, $150,000 Aristides Breeders’ Cup on June 3.

Trainer Greg Gilchrist and owner Harry Aleo had also been considering the five-furlong, $100,000 Beck Auto Group Turf Sprint at Lone Star Park on May 29.

“I was concerned about the heat in Texas and the fact he’s never run on the turf,” Gilchrist said.

Run at six furlongs, the Aristides will give Lost in the Fog a race over the track where the Breeders’ Cup will be run this year. When asked if this played into his decision, Gilchrist said, “That has something to do with it.”

Lost in the Fog will be accompanied to Churchill by stablemate Victorina, who will run in the Grade 3, $150,000 Dogwood Breeders’ Cup at one mile. Winner of the $112,000 Meafara at Hawthorne on April 8, Victorina is Breeders’ Cup-eligible.

Gilchrist said he had planned to rest Victorina after she ran second in a May 10 allowance race at Bay Meadows, but said she came out of that race so well he decided to keep her in training. Gilchrist also said he was looking for a spot to which he could ship both of his runners.

Lost in the Fog skipped out on Texas

Too Bad.

We went to the races yesturday to see him. Last weekend the Lone Star Park Website said “The Fog Rolls in on Memorial Day” so I was sure he would be there.

I am dying to see this guy. Anyone have pictures of him?

Few foes for Lost in the Fog

By MARTY McGEE -Daily Racing Form
May 31, 2006

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Champion sprinter Lost in the Fog was scheduled to arrive Wednesday in Louisville before making his second start of the year in the $150,000 Aristides Breeders’ Cup Handicap, one of three stakes to be run Saturday at Churchill Downs.

Lost in the Fog will carry 124 pounds when he tries to end a two-race losing streak in the Grade 3 Aristides, a six-furlong race for which Churchill racing officials are expecting a small field. Other probable starters include Kelly’s Landing (117), who set the track record in winning the Aristides last year; Exciting Metro, 115; Level Playingfield, 114; Yes Yes Yes, 113; and Cougar Cat, 112.

Lost in the Fog, a 4-year-old colt based in northern California with trainer Greg Gilchrist, won the first 10 races of his career en route to earning the 2005 Eclipse Award for top sprinter. He faded to seventh in his 3-year-old finale, the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, as an odds-on favorite, then lost his only start this year, the April 22 Golden Gate Sprint, finishing second to Carthage.

Russell Baze, who has ridden Lost in the Fog in all but one of the colt’s 12 starts, is scheduled to ride again Saturday.

The Aristides is a primary feature of an outstanding stakes Saturday at Churchill. In contrast to previous years, Churchill has chosen to concentrate many of its best races on select Saturdays, versus the old way of spacing them throughout the meet. Indeed, there are no stakes here on the weekends of June 10-11 or 24-25; the post-Kentucky Derby highlight of the meet comes with six stakes on Stephen Foster Super Saturday, June 17.

Besides the Aristides, the Saturday card also will feature the $150,000 Dogwood BC, a one-mile race for 3-year-old fillies, and the $100,000 Opening Verse Handicap, for older horses at 1 1/16 miles on turf. Those three races, along with the $70,000 Texas Glitter overnight handicap, will be grouped into a pick-four wager.

The Dogwood is expected to mark the first start for Ready to Please since she won the April 14 Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn Park. Other probables are Coolwind, Coronado’s Vision, Ex Caelis, Joint Effort, Rich Fantasy, and Victorina. Joint Effort also comes off a noteworthy win, having captured the La Troienne Stakes on the May 6 Derby undercard.

Three horses are expected to share a high weight assignment of 118 pounds in the Opening Verse: Purim, Rush Bay, and the 2004 winner, Senor Swinger. Other probables include Free Thinking (116), Mighty Military (114), and On the Acorn (113).

He is gorgeous.
Dont forget to get his hat !!
http://www.horsehats.com/LostInTheFog.html

love the hat

The last thing is the world I need is another baseball cap. . .when he ran at Golden Gate Fields last time they had one hat available that they were doing a silent auction on.
I quit looking when it hit $60!
I spent my extra pennies going through admission to get bobblehead dolls. . .

A friend of mine is an owner of Cougar Cat, so it’s going to be tough to cheer for Lost in the Fog;) I hope it’s a good race, no matter who wins!

The FedEx flight has arrived and Fog rolls in!

DRF 6/1/06 “No excuses if Fog doesn’t fire now”

excerpt:

Trainer Greg Gilchrist said that the colt’s defeat in his 4-year-old debut, the April 22 Golden Gate Sprint on his home circuit in northern California, “wasn’t completely unexpected,” but that he expects Lost in the Fog to fire hard Saturday.

“I did what I could do to get him right” before the Golden Gate race, said Gilchrist. “He’s a big, heavy horse, and I could’ve worked him five more times and he still wouldn’t have been any fitter.”

Awesome run by Fog!

Like the announcer said, he’s back. He ran like his old self.

Welcome back, Fog…

Can’t tell you how satisfying this run was today. It was so frustrating that the BC fans didn’t get to see the real LITF, and while Carthage certainly deserves credit for his run at GG, Gilchrest was admirably reluctant to point out how badly his horse handled the loose track that day. BTW, bobble owners beware: while it feels substantial, the little guy shattered into a zillion pieces when it slipped from my desk. :^(.

do you need a back up

I spent my last visit to GGF going through the turnstile so I happen to have an extra. drop me an email at aol if you would like a replacement.

Stepping into the Churchill Downs winner’s circle after gleefully watching his dream horse run to victory, owner Harry Aleo announced to no one in particular: “The Fog is back.”

“Some people have been saying he’s over the hill, or whatever,” said Russ Baze. “He’s not.”

 Welcome back Fog!

“I’m looking forward to that Breeders’ Cup,” said Aleo. “I’d give my right arm to win that one this year.”

Way to go LITF!!!

We were screaming our lungs out for him. Glad to see him back!

Summit of Speed (Calder) for Saturday July 15th

Excerpts regarding Fog’s next race:

DRF July 10 "A dozen willing to challenge Fog

Reigning Eclipse Award-winning sprinter Lost in the Fog may not have scared away any of the opposition, but the freakishly fast Dubai Escapade obviously did when entries were drawn Monday for Saturday’s $1.96 million Summit of Speed program at Calder Race Course.

A surprisingly large field of 13 horses, including Lost in the Fog, passed the entry box for the Grade 2, $500,000 Smile Sprint …

Lost in the Fog will carry high weight of 125 pounds in the six-furlong Smile Sprint, one more than he toted to victory in the Grade 3 Artistides BC Handicap on June 3 at Churchill Downs. Lost in the Fog won his first eight starts as a 3-year-old, including the 2005 Carry Back, before concluding his campaign with a seventh-place finish in the BC Sprint.

Among those also shipping to south Florida for the Smile are Kelly’s Landing, Friendly Island, Gaff, Joey P., Weigelia, and Gold Storm. They will be joined by a large local contingent, headed by Nightmare Affair, Pomeroy, and Mister Fotis. Other Calder-based contenders include B. B. Best, Universal Form, and Chandtrue.

Lost in the Fog, who drew post 10 for the Smile, arrived at Calder late Saturday and galloped over the track for the first time on Monday morning.

Good luck LITF!

I’m going this Saturday!! I’ll try to take some good pictures. Can’t wait!!

What happened in the Smile?

I don’t get TVG here so wasn’t able to see the race. All I saw was that he finished out of the money. What happened???

The winning horse’s name [in the Grade 2, $500,000 Smile Sprint] certainly says it all “Nightmare Affair”. LITF finished 9th out of 13 horses.
