Lost In The Fog: Feb 2002 - Sep 2006; godspeed to you!

Colt has never been more ready. He loves Belmont, he loves the distance, and he’s the best sophomore in America currently running. If he wins, I think he’s rightfully HOTY. Too bad they don’t give HOTY to sprinters.

I adore this horse to pieces. He give me chills watching him.

I got my grandpa on the LITF bandwagon ^__^;;

Brought to Ireland some videos of races I had taped and one of them was a LITF - put it on and he just shook his head for a moment afterward.

He’s been around the block and seen many of the best racehorses/jumpers/etc. in the past 50 years and he agreed with me that LITF is something special.

Here’s a toast for a great 2006 year for LITF!!

Um, make that STOOD at stud for a $7,500 fee. I would guess it’s probably a “tiny” bit higher now?!?

I’m with Lord Helpus on this one. I too have had my heart broken by promising youngsters, only the straw that broke my back was FuPeg. He had everything going for him. I’m still convinced that as soon as he won the Derby, he was worth SO MUCH MONEY that all parties involved decided not to risk running him all out again. Just my theory, but it makes sense, doesn’t it?

The BC Sprint is 6 furlongs, which should suit him very well.

THey are advertising this race on SF tv. I don’t know which channel.

Liza I love the slogan - “The Fog Rolls In Over Bay Meadows”

Adding to the “event”: HorseRacing TV (HRTV) will broadcast from Bay Meadows Oct. 1 as Lost in the Fog looks to remain undefeated in the $100,000 Speed Handicap, his final tune-up for the TVG Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. I) Oct. 29 at Belmont Park. HRTV’s Laffit Pincay III will be on-hand to anchor the network’s coverage from the San Mateo track.

I don’t think TVG is able to get video access to it - live that is at least

It seems inconceivable to me that Gilchrest would run a compromised LITF, after all the caution he’s demonstrated to this point. I don’t know anything about bar shoes; can someone explain the trackman’s concern?

I’m not as hands-on as others on this BB but flipping back a few pages to a prior article on LITF gives light to some of this.

“It’s just Training 101,” Gilchrist said, downplaying the condition that afflicts many racehorses. “It’s just like a human having a cracked finger nail up into the cuticle. It can be very painful, but the main thing is you don’t want it to get infected. We are a lot more educated and have a lot more at our disposal nowadays to deal with this, like fiberglass patches.”

A patch was placed on Lost in the Fog’s hoof Thursday, and he galloped in a bar shoe (a shoe with a bar across the middle) …

For now I think Gilchrist just wants to keep the bar on as much as possible to ensure a very solid healing of the crack. So no reason whatsoever to take it off for a few gallops on the track. As for racing with the bar on that, I agree, sounds illogical as can be. If you can’t take it [bar shoe] off because the hoof has not firmed up as much as you want - and you risk ruining all the repairs you’ve done - then I’d assume you’d scratch.

No one else has even suggested LITF being scratched so I think the bar will come off and he’ll blaze as per usual

I think Harry Aleo has just become my new hero!

As much as I’d like to see Lost in the Fog in the hunt for the TC sounds like his connections are doing what’s best for the horse, and that’s music to my ears.

WOW… Hats off to LITF!!!

He is absolutely amazing. I hope to see him dominate open company as easily.

Mr. Aleo sure sounds like an interesting man. Someone that has lots of stories to tell! I hope Lost in The Fog continues to do so well. Gotta love that horse!!! And his connections!

Great to see that ESPN picked up the coverage - albeit that I wasn’t able to catch it - showing it on ESPN News no less

From the Blood-Horse: Lost in the Fog drew an on-track crowd of 8,314 – more than double a normal Saturday at Bay Meadows with a giveaway.

Great to see the fan support and more then a few Chronicle folks adding to that tally!

Also very nice to see that while his competition was slim, his effort never the less was strong: 7 3/4-length victory, final time of 1:08.05 was just .8 seconds slower than the track record. Considering he wasn’t even asked to go-go-go you know he would’ve broken the track record … if they wanted to

Worth noting: Today’s (G2)$750k Louisiana Super Derby winner, The Daddy, a purported sprinter by trade, had the stuffing knocked out of him at Spa by Lost In The Fog (I was there) and yet was able to stretch out fine for 1 1/4 mi effort … hmm …

On to Belmont, where the Fog will rapidly roll in!

… from the above cited SF Chronicle article, why is he called ‘Lost In The Fog’? Is it because he is based in the notorious foggy city of San Francisco? Nope -

On a horse farm in Ocala, Fla., three years ago, breeder Susan Seper went to the pasture to check on a weanling, but the field was draped in a heavy fog. As Seper searched, from out of the mist the horse materialized and ambled toward her, as if emerging from a dream.

Lost in the Fog.

Hi all. This is my first post, but I’m a big fan of LITF. Don’t know if this is helpful, but I found the list of nominations for the King’s Bishop on the Saratoga website:

King’s Bishop Nominations

It’s nice to share with others who are excited about him as well.

Although I am an original Trekkie (I rarely dress as Klingon warrior princess anymore) and my daughter was is the movie Trekkies 2, I never really appreciated William Shatner until Denny Crane. He is wonderful.
Thanks for the heads up!

I saw this race and was very impressed with the little guy. He led from start to finish and won so easily it gave me chills. There seemed to be no effort on his part whatsoever. When I talked to Greg he said he’d just gotten him and was only trying him out to see what he could do. I could see the grin on Greg’s face in the winner’s circle from my seat.

At the barn, Frisco Star and LITF were stabled next to each other. Boy what a difference in the two. LITF was eating it up for the camera and Frisco Star just peered out from his stall.

LITF is giving 2-6 lbs to the other horses, carrying 123 lbs. Anyone know what his prior weights have been?

That is very fair to be honest - in the Swale Stakes he was assigned 120 lbs (the most in the field was 122 and least was 116 lbs) - it shouldn’t slow him down much.

I’m looking forward to seeing him live on Saturday

Liz, you would’ve been joined with a (relatively) large crowd if you had made it to Golden Fields …

DRF 5/17/05 “Lost in the Fog’s track-record effort draws good crowd”

excerpt:

A total of 6,060 fans were ontrack, up 72 percent from the corresponding Saturday last year (when racing was at Bay Meadows) and 49 percent compared with the average Saturday attendance at the just-concluded Bay Meadows meeting.

Peter Tunney, Golden Gate general manager, said Lost in the Fog created a buzz, and fans and media responded.

“You could feel it in the paddock and in the winner’s circle,” Tunney said. “It was a great treat.”

For the Golden Bear Breeders’ Cup he earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 110. He thus has earned a 100+ Beyer in every race he’s run. I’m not aware of any other horse (since the inception of the Beyer figs) that has ever done that from his maiden onwards.

Very cool - any chance you have photos to share?

From the Daily Racing Form
Gilchrist: BC Sprint is ‘definite’ for Fog
By CHUCK DYBDAL
SAN MATEO, Calif. - Trainer Greg Gilchrist confirmed Monday that Lost in the Fog will run in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Belmont on Oct. 29.

Gilchrist said Lost in the Fog would run in either the Grade 1, $500,000 Vosburgh at Belmont on Oct. 1, which would be Lost in the Fog’s first meeting against older horses, or just train up to the Sprint. If Gilchrist opts to run in the Vosburgh, he said he will keep Lost in the Fog at Belmont until the Breeders’ Cup

Frisco Star out two months

The talented 2-year-old Frisco Star, a stablemate of Lost in the Fog who set a track record at Santa Rosa in his debut, will be on the sidelines for two months with sore shins. Gilchrist said he had hoped to run Frisco Star on Wednesday in an allowance race at Bay Meadows, but the race didn’t fill.

Gilchrist said the shins will be pin-fired, and Frisco Star would be given September and October off before coming back sometime in November.
