Love my huge imported warmblood

Interesting Post!

I guess a telling question is: If we could ALL afford our dream horse, how many of us would choose WB’s?

I honestly bought my horse b/c he seemed athletic, has nice conformation and was totally in my price range (esp being just out of college).

I’m 5’4" and I’ve comfortably ridden 14hh-17hh horses. Although - if I were to choose my Dream horse - I’m not quite sure which direction I would go…Given that I’m small and like to go XC, I think I’d actually go with a smaller horse with lots of jump…But I honestly think I’d be pretty open. I don’t think I’d know the breed I wanted till I found that particular horse.

Personally, I love to see a beautiful warmblood do good dressage, but I have a 15.2hh OTTB that has just as good movement, and he fits me better. I have another 16.1hh TB that was born to be a hunter… I love to watch him do a hunter round… but I’m starting to do dressage with him anyway, because I don’t want him jumping anymore and he still needs a job! He probably won’t ever move as nicely as the OTTB, and I’ll never be quite as comfortable on him b/c of his size, but I don’t care. I love them both, and brag about them both, because they’re beautiful, sweeet horses.

If I didn’t have my 2 boys, and money were no object, and I could find a beautiful WB under 15.3hh who was good at dressage, I’d give it just as much consideration as I’d give any other horse in my size/price range. I’d never restrict myself to a specific breed. I always look for a horse that has decent conformation and movement, a good temperament, and, somewhere between 14.3 and 15.3 because I’m just not comfortable on anything bigger. And although I do think there’s some breed prejudice in dressage, it may be more rooted in ‘perception’ than fact.

We have one at our barn that we call “water buffalo”. He’s like the stereotypical big, goofy, country boy type. But we all love him and can’t wait to see where his talent will be. (He’s only 3.)

If money was no object, I might buy this one:

but it seems silly to buy a baroque-looking WB instead of just buying a baroque horse if that’s what floats your boat (love those chunky necks!).

I have to agree that there is as much prejudice against warmbloods from some as there are arguments about their genetic predisposition to do a better job from others.

People on smaller or non-WB breeds don’t ride better just because, and those warmbloods, big or small, still have to be ridden properly to be successful.

I own a TB whom I love and who will be with me forever, and ride nice, imported and homebred warmbloods at my barn as their generous owners let me have the experience, and I have to say that I, personally am sold on the concept : ). I want one of those sport models when I’m ready to add a 2nd horse. But with everything, it’s personal preference.

Someone at our barn just bought a German Riding Pony. I’ve only seen photos but from the pics you’d assume it’s 17 hh–it’s only 14.3.

Can’t wait to see it in person.

Oh I would love a little fancy German Riding Pony.

If I had the funds, I’d import exactly what I have now (I did not buy him in his prime, I would not have been able to afford him)…A nice English TB. I love mine…elegant, light…considering I’m only 5’4, I don’t need a gigantic warmblood…I prefer the TB lightness.

Well if I had all the money in the world I would still own my midget sized (under 15.2), US bred, Hanoverian mare that I constantly get asked if she is a QH, TB, Morgan, Arab cross…you name it, anything except a warmblood  She was also sold for dirt cheap because she “would never be anything more than a pleasure horse” because of her size.

There’s bias everywhere against everything, you just have to look for it.

Am I the only person here getting a little bored with all the “large, expensive, imported warmblood” rants.

So, here we go gals/lads…

Here’s my story:
At the age of 50 something, and could finally afford a terrific horse, yes, yes all of my previous horses were terrific, and this expensive, imported horse is bred for it… And it is so much easier…I mean a horse that is really bred for the sport. And I was lucky enough to find one and be able to affored it… I have competed FEI on my much beloved TB, I am a AA rider, who can sit the trot…And I am so pleased that I finally got this amazingly gifted horse.

I am 5’5", I bought him as a 4 yr old. He was 16:1. He is now a wide 17h. I am just fine with him. I do not have a problem collecting him, or a 8 meter circle, or whatever else. He is now 7 yrs. Very confirmed 2nd, really good 3rd.

I totally support all of my colleagues, regardless of the breed or size of their horse. Please show me some support also.

Enough of the WB bashing[/QUOTE]

great that you have a horse, which has been with you for 3yrs doing well at the level your in and for your chosen dispiline

I think you can pretty safely interpret comments the following way:

“Oh, she has that huge fancy warmblood and can’t ride” (God, she’s going to kick my ass all year…since you know, she really can ride since she takes lessons and works hard at it…)

“Oh- an arab/TB/draft mix- how ummm- nice” (Oh shit- she can actually steer and stop that thing- she’s going to kick my ass “Gerwutlingerdonninger45” can’t possibly score high enough on gaits to make up for the 2’s we get in our halts that take half way around the ring to execute")

:lol::lol::lol:

Kind of like the old song

“If you can’t be with the one you love, love the one your with”

My Goodness…TB, Warmblood, Arab, Gradehorse…enjoy…isn’t that why we’re in this?

Agreed!!! Otherwise, I’m not sure why I spend half my pay check on the brat! hehehe

I’ll second that!

I guess a telling question is: If we could ALL afford our dream horse, how many of us would choose WB’s?

If money were no object, I’d have:

A WB for dressage and then another one for jumping.

A Quarter Horse for barrel racing.

A big, comfy, steady-eddie for trail riding.

A pony to pull a cart.

And a mini to pet.

When I win the Lotto, that’s what I’ll have!

But ya know, some people just want us to know they love their warmbloods. Fabulous.

Some people seem to want us to admit that their warmblood is better than our fresiappaloorabiabred, and acknowledge that the money they spent was worth it.

Just… no. If competition is YOUR thing, then YOU need to justify the money spent to yourself. I’m not going to do it for you. I didn’t spend the $ or take out a 17th mortgage on my house because I decided it WASN’T worth it. For me. If it is for you, go for it, but I’m not going to be either envious or dissolving in puddles of admiration.

It’s a horse. It has 4 legs and two nostrils (both of which ooze boogers to be rubbed on your jacket just like my horse’s) and hooves made of hard stuff. The 9s you get on gaits in dressage shows might really excite you, and I’m thrilled for you, but clearly that’s not something that would make my day, or I would have gone that direction.

So I can be happy for YOU because you got what YOU wanted, without acknowledging that what YOU want is better than what I want. Does that make any sense? I don’t feel the need to acknowledge the general superiority of a 6 figure warmblood, because seriously my 4 figure mudblood gives me just as much enjoyment, and therefore is just as good in the grand scheme of things.

Geez, not even I can comprehend what I just wrote. I think javascript syntax is seeping into my grammar.

I understand what you wrote, and I agree completely!

Me too!

I’m getting all misty eyed just thinking of the horrors you’ve had to endure.

It’s a Greek tragedy.

Your next thread should be about how everyone hates you because you’re beautiful. Or short. Or blond. Or rich. Or whatever.

And just to add…a 50K horse can step in a hole just as easily as a 5K horse…I’d rather loose the 5K vs the 50K.
