Love Pentosan - questions re: Gold, Platinum? concentrations?

What is the shelf life on regular Pentosan from Horseprerace? I just found an unopened box that was shipped last year in April…ooops I have no idea why I didn’t use it. Probably good for the trash? What a waste.

Mine that came from them have exp dates on them. I don’t use it beyond that date.

sophie,

I just had a bottle shipped last week and it does not expire til 2018; definitely check the date before you toss it. The expiration is pretty small, it took me a minute to see it.

Well thanks to this thread and your answers, I now find myself with a 50 mL bottle of Pentosan Gold that expires 2/2016. Yay!

Last time my horse got Pentosan a friend of mine gave her the IM injections. Friend is not around anymore, so I’m wondering if I could do the IM injections myself, if someone shows me…? How hard can it be?

It’s not hard, assuming your horse is good with needles. If you have someone around that can show you/instruct you the first time that is experienced (like a vet, trainer, BM, etc.) that would be ideal.

Yes my BM or even the vet can show me. Mare is an Ottb and is just fine with shots etc.
I am looking for disposable syringes online and the size I want is on back order at all of my usual online stores (KV vet, ValleyVet etc)…what’s up with that?!

I bought a box of 50 two years ago from a medical supply store. Way cheaper than I could find at a vet supply. I just used google and found one. I think I paid $20 for 50 syringes and 100 needles.

Most feed stores should carry them - I just grabbed a handful when I was there last week, they are usually near the vetwrap and other first aid type supplies. I needed 12cc syringes because of my behemoth 1500lb TB, and I only had 6cc on hand.

Sounds like you should be good to go once you get a little instruction!

No sure if this is mentioned, but looking at switching my horse to Pentosan. For the Pentosan Gold off Horseprerace.com, how many doses do you get from a 50mL bottle?

On another note, this thread has given me good hope to switch! My boy is 16 (as of the other day) and we still compete at a 1m in the jumper ring and hope to make it at least to 1.10 once or twice. So making sure I give him the best care I can and keep his joints going. Being an OTTB, you all know how important that can be!

TIA!

I’m not 100% sure on the Pentosan Gold, but my vet told me to give 6 mL of the regular Pentosan while my gelding on Adequan gets 5 mL of that.

Anyone else weigh in on that?

The dose is 3mg/kg

For example a 600kg horse would get 1800mg (using the 250mg/ml) that is 7.2cc. The gold has less pentosan per ml, so the dose is larger. You’ll need to look at the mg/ml on the bottle.

The Gold I buy does not have less Pentosan per ml. It contains Sodium pentosan polysulfate 250 mg/mL and Glucosamine 150mg/mL.

Okay…so assuming 10ccs is a bit high then. The Pentosan Gold I am looking at has Sodium Pentosan Polysulfate 250 mg/mL and Glucosamine 150mg/mL. It comes in a 50mL bottle so assuming this would roughly give me 7-8 doses?

My dosage for a horse that weighs 680kg (1500lb) is just over 8cc (8.16), which would give me 6 doses out of a 50mL bottle. However, 4 of those would be given in the first 4 weeks as a loading dose, so the first 50mL bottle will only last 3 months assuming I use the once a month maintenance protocol after that.

You will need to know what your horse weighs to calculate the dosage.

I give my small mare (15.1 Ottb, typical Tb build) 6mL per dose, so the 50 mL Pentosan Gold bottle will be good for the 4 loading doses then 4 monthly doses after that.

Last time I used it on her, we only did the loading doses in the Spring and man did I see a difference with just that, it carried her well into winter.

Shopmedvet.com has a great selection of syringes. My guy gets 5cc bi-weekly so I use the 6cc syringes with 20g 1.5" needles.
