Low Budget Jump Saddle for Wimpy Amateur

I’m sure others have said this, but finding a saddle for the horse is about knowing a horse’s shape and what types of saddles fit best with those shapes.

IMO, finding a saddle for the rider is less about finding one that people say is secure, but finding one that works with the rider’s conformation. The saddle that put the rider in the appropriate position will always be more secure than one that doesn’t. I see so many people wanting a deep seat and calf skin because it’s secure…when you can have a flat, flat saddle with the grain leather that is the right balance and the rider will feel infinitely more secure. It’s a combination of twist, seat, flaps, stirrup bar placement, etc.

If the rider has normal to shorter length legs, the Thorowgood jump saddle might work. It’s a fairly deep seat for a jump saddle and fits higher withered horses very well with clearance to spare. The new T8s are about $900, but their synthetic T4 counterparts are only $500ish. Wool flocked and adjustable gullets too. The flap is on the shorter side and not very forward which is why I mention leg length.

Might want to check out smith worthington. They have lots of models and flap options. They’re also wool flocked and will fit the horse based on wither tracings. First fit is free with saddle and they can reflock anytime for new horses/change of shape for $200.

Also, might want to check out middle burg tack and Trumbull mountain tack- both will take your wither tracings and try to find an awesome fit for your horse in their used saddle inventory.
