Luck: New HBO series about horse racing = CANCELLED 3/15

I loved the show. I was so discouraged when I heard it was cancelled yesterday. The horses were realistic ('tho way older than actual race horses), and to me, it was great to have horses as part of (sort-of) mainstream TV.

The characters are great – they live simply, and are plain-spoken, and they are pursuing a hope and a dream. I’d take them over all those Wall Streeters, who really are sleazy, with their faux respectability and integrity with their suburban homes and SUV driving wives and too many kids when all they’re doing is gambling, and gaming the system. Really…

Just my .2 cents, but I am disappointed that HBO caved and canceled the show…

Here is a brilliantly written article from yesterday:

It was a bummer for actor Carsten Norgaard: Hollywood Reporter March 13 ‘‘Luck’: Danish Actor to Recur as Middleman in Season 2’

Carsten Norgaard will play Oleg, a powerful Russian businessman who negotiates a deal between Dustin Hoffman’s Ace Bernstein and Michael Gambon’s Michael Smythe.

Looks like that’s done.

With two episodes of Season 2 already finished I do wonder if HBO will air them along with the remaining 2 episodes of Season 1. As cited by another since HBO owns and produces the show its impossible that the show would continue filming but aired on another network.

DRF 3/15 “Santa Anita horsemen sad to see ‘Luck’ gone”

“Luck” was taken out of production on Wednesday, one day after a stable-area accident claimed the life of a horse used in the production. That turn of events angered both trainer Julio Canani and Hall of Famer Ron McAnally, who believed there was an overreaction on the part of animal rights activists to an incident that could have happened at a riding club or in the show-jumping ring.

McAnally said he had a racehorse in his care perish in the same manner two years ago.

“He just flipped over backwards. We had to put him down,” McAnally said.

“In this particular case,” McAnally added, “whoever is objecting is just wrong.”

Jone Bouman, a local representative of the AHA, on Thursday afternoon described the fatality rate on “Luck” as “unprecedented.”

“In the last five years, of all the things we monitor - and that includes films, episodic television, even commercials - there was only one other horse death in the 2,000 productions we monitored, before the three on ‘Luck’,” Bouman said.

According to Bouman, that death occurred on the film “3:10 to Yuma.” Bouman said there were no fatalities on the recent films “War Horse,” “Secretariat,” and "Seabiscuit.

Since this was filmed at an actual track, would the series have been blamed if it was just any race horse who freaked and flipped over backwards and needed to be put down? The horse was walking in hand from one area of the track to another , it wasn’t being filmed… it wasn’t related to the show , it was an accident and they happen. That’s it! HBO should have stuck with it… and PETA and animal rights groups had they been able to see past there noses would have realized the show could have done some real good with story lines like the Prison Rehad program ect… Stupid short sighted idiots!

It was related to the show in that the agency the oversees the humane aspect prohibits a lip chain. Most likely a lip chain would have prevented the whole incident.

I loved the song they played over this week’s closing credits - Am I A Good Man by Them Two.

Thanks so much for sharing this link. There needs to be lots more publicity to expose these animal rights extremist organizations like PETA and HSUS.

Just finished reading this.

PETA stated the horses were drugged by quoting the necropsy report of one - although the medications had been administered after the horse’s injury.

Morons.

I for one will be canceling HBO.
For them to cave to such people is an outrage:mad:

Same here. We only got HBO to watch Luck. After yesterday’s “finale” we are in the process of removeing HBO from our DishNetwork Package.
