What a treat, thanks. I was lucky enough to page through a Jeffords family album (cousins of Sam Riddle) about 10 years ago, containing ‘home photos’ of both Man o’ War and Golden Broom.

Lovely! I have the Sotheby’s catalog from the 2004 auction of the M/M Walter Jeffords collection An example here which sold off many museum worthy items on MOW, War Admiral, et al
Thank you so much for posting; I don’t think I’d ever seen a color photo of him before. So interesting how much darker the Breyer model was (like tons of kids, that was my first Breyer ever, carried around the house many times). It’s wonderful to see him with “new” eyes so many years later.
If anyone hasn’t had the pleasure of the C.W. Anderson books, I highly recommend. It’s true, no one drew them quite like he did. I have a couple of first editions and don’t know if they’re worth all that much, but they are among my most treasured possessions.
As a teenager, I remember being enthralled when looking in the show case in the Rose Tree Hunt Club clubhouse. Photos of MOW plus his shoes. Riddle lived not to far from Rose Tree and had brought MOW to the Hunt Club for display. Of course, I wasn’t there when that happened!
And Jeffords–I THINK it was his land and mansion that is now Ridley Creek State Park down the road from the Hunt Club. Hunting Hill was where the hunt started many times.
Ah–the good old days…
This thread reminds me that going to the recent WEG was my first visit to Kentucky Horse Park, and I had forgotten if I previously knew that MOW is now buried there (along with War Admiral and others):

And this stride comparison near MOW’s grave is fun:

And wandering a bit off MOW, being able to give a Derby winner a rub on the head was fun:

But (and again apologies for straying a bit) what truly knocked my socks off was seeing the collection of Calumet trophies in the museum. Really, I want to go back just to study them a bit more closely as I was a little pressed for time during WEG. The hardware itself is valued at $1.2 M, but to look at all those trophies, and read the winners’ names and recall the history, well, it’s just awesome.
Too cool!
My two guys go back to MOW also, one through War Admiral and the other
through War Relic. Had great fun researching their pedigrees.
I was once in a vintage motel in KY that had a gift shop FULL of old stock items. I found a postcard rack of vintage Man O War postcards and bought them all. A great find!
My first trip to KY, I stayed at a hotel that had pictures in the lobby of MOW’s funeral- and of him embalmed, in a piano crate that they used as a casket.
Very, very strange, but interesting, none the less.

My current horse has him via War Admiral (through Crafty Prospector via Crafty Admrial.) My old OTTB also was related via Crafty Admiral (though not Mr P), plus he also had Man o’ War’s younger full brother, My Play. And Benny did have a lot of that family’s look, at least War Admiral’s.
The huntsman at Rose Tree Hunt was given a granddaughter of MOW back in the 50’s. Her name was Sky Battle. She raced till she was 5 then was bred several times. Always threw chestnut colts, until her last foal that was a filly who looked exactly like her, named Battle’s Image.
I must say, Sky Battle was a mean b**** in the stall. and even walking by her stall, she would reach her head out and try to bite.
We tried to put her back under saddle when she was 15. She was perfect for 2 weeks then started throwing fits. No more riding for Sky Battle!
