Looks lab to me  Also looks like she just weaned a litter!

Thanks for snagging her out of traffic and taking her home.

Bad news. Vet called and she is positive for heartworm. We suspected she might be. Heart and lungs sound good. We discussed slow kill method with the vet already. We’ll get more info this afternoon.

I’m thinking she was dumped. I’ll still give her owner time to claim her, but poor dog.
Oh poor thing!!!

The vet said he thinks she has been on her own for awhile. I will go back several months to look at lost dog ads. She goes back to the vet on Wednesday for heartworm pre-treatment. I pick her up Wednesday afternoon.

Just gave her a bath and she’s drying in the crate. Hubby is picking up a dog bowl for her at the store. She has a collar and leash with just our phone number, since we haven’t figured out what to call her. I suggested “Nomygee” (stands for ‘not my dog’, LOL!).

She’s beautiful! Thank you for getting her treated as well. I’m glad it sounds like everyone is getting along. I understand your comfort level leans toward keeping them separate, which is fine, but whenever I hear about people saying never to put two females together I have to provide my experience which has been pretty extensive) hundreds of foster dogs going through my house) and very very rarely have we had female-female aggression, the norm is overwhelmingly the opposite. My female lab and female schnoodle have never had any issues in the least, and they may be the most affectionate combo of my four dogs (the lab regularly receiving “eye washes” from the other one, which is so gross to me but hey).

She looks like a “Cinder” to me… Hmm.

Hehe! we’re debating between Cindy and Kelly. She doesn’t sit or lay down, but she also doesn’t jump on you. She is all clean now and has been out with the family on the leash. We’re getting her out again soon. I might try to give her a quick lesson in sit tonight.

Just want to say how kind and fair you are to the dog and the possible previous owners who might be looking for her — however, when somebody goes out to buy a dog bowl, sounds like she may be staying for quite a while  Hope so.

I agree with bits about the girl dog issue. In keeping ONLY girls dogs for … 20 years? I have had ONE bitch fight. And while it was indeed scary, neither dog was hurt. And it really was our fault for not recognizing that the older dog was pretty stressed with the move and she’d really gone deaf and she really misinterpreted the game of stick we were playing with the younger dog. It was NOT AT ALL a girl dogs not getting along issue, but an old, deaf, stressed dog thinking she was protecting me from the young dog trying for the stick.

Girls that don’t get along can be hell in a house, but I really think that’s the rarity, instead of the norm (at least in the breeds I’ve had!)

Kelly learned to sit last night.

We are feeding her in the crate and not allowing her near our son without supervision. Reading that other post about someone trying to rehome a dog that bites children (!?) makes me wary. Very wary… So far, she is not showing any signs of aggression. If any dog growled at family members or bit anyone, they should get a one way trip to the vet.

Two dogs is enough for us, but we have family members that are interested in her. I think being a one dog household is better than three, from the dog’s point of view.

I did the slow kill with a feral rescue. Very easy and pretty cheap.

…but intact male dogs are very, very determined and will find a way to get IN to your yard, climb up, jump over, dig under, wiggle through. It only takes a minute!
Ask me how I know. Under a chain link fence that had no discernible gap.

I’ll bet those puppies were cute, too (of course all puppies are cute…it’s the finding good homes part that people have trouble with). When people asked about the puppies sire, did you say “He was really smart and good at solving problems”?

So far, so good. No neighborhood indiscretions here. She is acting like, well, a young Lab.

Oh yes, we are definitely worried about that. We do have distant neighbors with intact males they fail to contain. We haven’t seen any lately, but this will bring them out. She will be outside under supervision only.

We have a spayed female we will also keep separate. I have heard a lot about not having two female dogs that weren’t raised together. She gets along with everything: other dogs, cats, farm animals, etc…, but I have heard not to trust two female dogs. That’s why we won’t be keeping her.
I’ve always had two female dogs and have never had a problem. That’s just not true.

Also if you go with the crate and walking don’t walk her up and down in your neighborhood. Males will track her and you will have a bunch of males hanging around your house all ready for “love”.

Regarding heats, you will see her vulva swell first, she’ll probably lick herself a lot, then you will see bloody discharge. Usually they are one week coming in, one week in standing heat, and one week going out. The rule at my house was that the dog was not allowed outside unaccompanied from the very first sign to the last. Just to be safe. NEVER allowed out unaccompanied. Not even in a pen or fence and for just a second. Boy dogs will move heaven and earth to get to her and they can be sneaky.

You can get pants for her to wear during her heat if she’s in the house. Just stick a light pad in the pants. Ditto on the no walking around the neighborhood. You don’t want to advertise.

I have always had multiple females in a household and never had a problem, but you should always be cautious with introducing any new dog to the pack.

Good for you for helping her.

Kelly was amped up this morning and happier than usual to see other dogs. I dropped her off at the vet to start the heartworm treatment and they said…wait for it…

…she’s in heat.

Yep, just as I was telling the vet about her stinky ears (they will clean them today and she’ll probably need antibiotics for them) she stood up from sitting and left something on the floor. Vet said it looked like she was just going into heat.

I will re-read and follow the advice regarding leash while outside; even in the fenced yard (not too hard to dig under for a motivated male). I suppose I’ll need puppy pads for the house. The vet said backwards boy’s whitey-tighties work, too (with a pad inside and the ‘escape hatch’ for the tail). The vet recommended waiting until after the heat to spay her. How much do they bleed? Are the pad thingies big, or just like panty liners? (The things you can only ask on a board dominated by women, LOL!)

At least I know she isn’t pregnant, right? Looking for the half full glass here…

I like these panties for my girls. They’re very soft…some others are stiffer and they wind up rubbing where the hind leg joins the body. I just rotate panties and wash every couple days. But if you wanted to use a pad, use panty liners.

If you have hard flooring, you may find it easier to just leave her naked. She’ll keep herself clean and there may really just be the odd spot of blood that’s easy to wipe up. They don’t bleed that much at all, IME…it’s really just spotting.

Fun times ahead! (And yeah, at least she’s not already pregnant!)

Of course my husband wears boxers…
