My first time owning a mare in years too.
Tail flaps on blankets don’t help and we’re in the cold days of winter here so no bathing.
I soak rags in hot water…as hot as we can tolerate… and gently soak/wash legs off. Baby wipes sound like a much better idea!
I then smear some vaseline on her legs.
HA! That’s what I get, right? I knew the right word, just missed the second “m”. Oh well.
It just happens to be on my list of fun to say words.
Equiderma lotion might work quite well, too. It’s my go to for cannon keratosis.
Oh, super. I’m about to start leasing a mare. In the past it was always geldings. With this one I thought, Hey, great, no more Retrieve-a-Bean! And now … sigh.
For all that they may be weird about it, mares are way easier and less disgusting to clean than geldings! Welcome to the mare club!
Thank you! It’s been interesting for sure. But I have to disagree with you about the cleanliness of all my geldings……there have been 4 and they have all been amazingly clean. This mare, though? Holy smokes she’s gross. But she’s pretty so I’m overlooking a lot of stuff! Lol!
Ah, got ya. But, one dirty gelding may change your view on mares over geldings in the cleaning their nasty bits department.
I don’t doubt you for one minute
I use baby oil on the crusty stuff before gently washing with a warm washcloth or a baby wipe in summer. I don’t use soap on the udder or between the teats, feel that makes the skin too dry.
Just a quick update. I used a product called Smeg U Later (can’t even type that without laughing). Mare gunk officially gone and it smells good too!
I also use baby oil to loosen before washing and it works great.
And my mare also makes it weird. But if someone tried to give me a clinical wipe down with warm rags and baby oil, I might inadvertently make it weird too. So you know, you do you, girl.

I might inadvertently make it weird too
In terms of the weirdness factor, my super senior seems to lactate when I clean her. I have no idea what it is, but whitish liquid comes out of her. I generally just try not to think about it.

Cushing’s symptom?
Good thought - I hadn’t put two and two together on this one. We actually tested her for Cushing’s last fall. Her results were in the equivocal category. She does have some of the clinical signs, but we tested her while we were treating her for a corneal ulcer (yes, a symptom) and my vet thought most likely her stress level explained the result. (It was a bad one and we were treating her FOREVER and she didn’t appreciate it.) Our plan is to retest. I might actually have her do it this spring when she does vaccinations.
