Maybe I'm an alcoholic, but surely I'm not alone!!

As I plan my cross over from the eventing world, I’m wondering about the ice cold beer or mixed drink after a hot day of showing while you’re grazing your horse. Or cold hosing. Or whatever! And with AECs going on, my Facebook newsfeed is full of pictures of the silo bar that all the eventers are stoked about.

So, how is the booze scene in hunterland? Is it frowned upon to carry your red solo cup to the was rack?

It’s not common in my area. The H/J scene has a lot of children and young riders, so I imagine that is why.

LOL, Um any color solo cup will do, many barns even have a bar set up in there tack rooms … I for one usually have a Drink of the day all planned out for multiple day shows, sort of like the Cruise ships have .

I always have something in my cooler for the end of the day, and the barn I ride with at the bigger shows does, too.

Since I do self-care at shows I feel it is only just and proper that I enjoy myself whilst mucking/grazing/staring into space in a post-jump off stupor/whatever. Plus, my horse loves beer and cider so, you know- it’s a bonding thing.

Also: I grew up in hunterland, and now do the jumpers, but everyone I ride with and board with are eventers. Even my trainer is one- he’s at the AECs right now, in fact. I definitely appreciate the atmosphere at events, but it isn’t impossible to recreate it or find it at H/J shows. It’s just a bit of a different mentality, but generally if you can find some other DIY-er ammies to hang out with you will be fine.

We had a show around here where no alcohol was allowed. Eek! It was a one day show and you worked off your trailer. We’d just keep the cooler in the truck and not be flagrant about it.

I’ve always waited until the end of the show day to indulge, but holy hell, my previous barn used to go ALL OUT. I feel like as long as you’re somewhat vaguely discreet about it, it’s all good.
At my current barn, one of the lovely ladies will have a sip of beer before hopping on for a lesson to calm her nerves.

I think the main “problem” is the number of kids around like WDQ said.
In the same breath I will say that the BO/trainer and I like the same cocktail so I can always count on buming one, but I don’t do it in the wash rack or in a crowd.

Beer AND wine, especially when management tries to kill the adults by making us show at the very end of the day…

I’ve never shown anywhere and with anyone who didn’t have a cooler of beer and wine for after the show. And occasionally before for a few particular nervous adults!

Yea not in my area. We even sneak in the booze and cups to the ‘no alcohol allowed’ grounds. We also have frosty beverages in our coolers, that we usually pack up to the arena at the barn, and in the community fridge.

Not drinking would make you the odd one out

The genteel add vodka to the partial contents of a Gatorade bottle or even a small carton of orange juice.

This can start at 8:30 in the morning.

It was an H/J trainer who taught me that girth buckles are the perfect size to pop the tops off beer bottles! Handy to know.

When I was in Hunterland, I always brought drinks to shows.

But maybe this is why I’m now an eventer.

I can’t think of a show in my zone that doesn’t have wine or beer. It’s usually a sponsored nightly event. If the show doesn’t have any it’s guarenteed to be back in the barns.

Yup lots of alcohol for me, is it possible to show hunters without it?

Ummm surely you jest…

What shows are you going to? Just curious, as the bigger shows tend to have stables have adult beverage areas in the barns or sponsored events. “I” don’t see it as much at smaller or schooling shows (and grazing at away shows at my show barn is a big no no. Of course, that depends on your level of comfort).

I don’t drink at event or CT, because I usually have my daughter or a kid or 2 with me. If it is just me and the adults, I’ll have a wine cooler ect. Drinking is around at higher rated shows in hunters (um-especially in Florida…) usually after-the-fact. I have noticed eventers (now I am in eventer land) swing some back whenever.

Foxhunters still have the corner on the market

You guys make me feel great! I’m sure there are tons of DIYers that I haven’t met yet, but I very much look forward to it! I hope everyone I meet is as friendly as y’all here on COTH!

Also, I’ll be at brownland mostly, may make the trek to shows at the horse park, but if y’all are ever at Brownland, there is guaranteed to be drinks at my stalls!

You’ll fit right in!
