Maybe I'm an alcoholic, but surely I'm not alone!!

As I plan my cross over from the eventing world, I’m wondering about the ice cold beer or mixed drink after a hot day of showing while you’re grazing your horse. Or cold hosing. Or whatever! And with AECs going on, my Facebook newsfeed is full of pictures of the silo bar that all the eventers are stoked about.

So, how is the booze scene in hunterland? Is it frowned upon to carry your red solo cup to the was rack?
Oh Lordy, welcome girl. I’ve never been to a horse show that didn’t involve alcohol.

I don’t do big shows, but I definitely drink. Cooler full of beer and even mimosas for the early classes. It’s pretty normal here in Louisiana.

It was an H/J trainer who taught me that girth buckles are the perfect size to pop the tops off beer bottles! Handy to know.
Keep count of how many “I found this post useful. Thumbs up!” marks this post gets.

Ummm surely you jest…
I wish I was! Our barn literally has 3-4 adult ammys that show and like 25+ kids. All it would take is one mom who doesn’t approve and my trainer has a problem on her hands. So we usually go out afterwards and get pizza/beer vs bringing it to the show. I stick to local shows these days though so it absolutely could just be my area.
When I go to dressage shows we always have wine in the barn aisle afterwards, but its mainly adults at those shows.

The Grand Oaks Equestrian Center in Central Florida has an exceptional on-site BAR.

LOL, Um any color solo cup will do, many barns even have a bar set up in there tack rooms … I for one usually have a Drink of the day all planned out for multiple day shows, sort of like the Cruise ships have .
I need to find your stall at horse shows!
I usually don’t drink while wandering around the horse show grounds… but I have come to really appreciate having horse trailer with living quarters… knowing I can head back and have something cool waiting from is a wonderful thing. Since I work for a wine importer there is nothing better at the end of a long hot horse show than some Prosecco or Cava!

Not my thing, but Dad was OK with scotch flavored snow-cones at shows. He’d order a plain one and add his own ‘flavoring’.

Apparently Mom was a bit confused the first time he went for a snow cone; he’s the last person you’d expect to order one.

As long as you loudly sing the Red Solo Cup song while you do so, you are fine.

Finally! A connection between horses and booze! People often ask me how owning a horse Farm and starting a new vodka brand are related . . .

I never questioned it.

Even though my HJ trainer has mostly kids as her other students, all those kids have parents! And the parents like to drink! The parents are all closer to my age anyway.

This has turned into such a lovely thread! I think is Ammys should get together and have nice shirts made that discreetly talks about booze. Something like “I’m a lowly ammy DIYer” on the front and the back says “so who brought it today”. Lol

Just please don’t imbibe and drive.

Remember the horrific accident in Wellington earlier this year.

21 so far!! It should be added, the girth a with roller buckles do prove to make opening the beer a challenge, but it can be done as long as you haven’t had too many! Lol

Agreed!! I will definitely be the first person to tell someone they’ve had too much today and feed and hydrate them until sober!

I was berated at the tack trailer this weekend. I had a beer in hand…but not one for the owner! lol I was bringing them some business so she let it slide that I didn’t bring her a beer

I think it would depend on the barn your are riding with.

I was with a Hunter barn that was all older ammies and when we were going to Thermal the trainer joked that our stalls were right by the bar… and yes a few days we sat at the bar and had some wine.

Another barn I rode with had more kids so the tent area was filled with candy and snacks… no one brought out adult beverages. So of course I went and hung out with some friends from another barn drinking some wine watching the evening Derby  And this was a barn I met on COTH

You just have to find the right set up for you… Hunter land is fun!!!

And of course either stay on the show grounds in the trailer or get an Uber to the hotel

I would have to switch barns if alcohol was not allowed at shows! We ALWAYS have wine and often walk around the show grounds with it. I usually stay on the grounds in my LQ trailer, which makes in nice. (I never drink on the day we are packing up and leaving because I haul my own horse.)

But surely that is what your tack trunk is for? Wine doesn’t have to be in the tack room with the kids, it can be discreet!

I will say I don’t see the solo cups as much whan people are in the wash racks and what not, but in all honesty, the people in the wash racks at the hunter/jumper shows around me are mostly the grooms, while the riders are back under the tent enjoying their cold beverage of choice

I’ve also made friends with many gate people by bringing them a discrete cup of something toward the end of a busy day. Starbucks in the morning and alcohol in the evening stays on their good side - and if there’s one person you want to stay on the good side of at the horse show it’s the person running your ring!

I think we’d be best friends! I stash a bottle of fireball in my tack trunk and require exactly one shot before my first round :lol! My trainer has been known to make a gas station run to pick up a bottle if I’m running low! We also bring one of those island oasis machines and set it up in the tack stall - margaritas and daiquiris never taste better than after a long show!
