has something changed with the rules for entering different medal finals? i know a few years ago you were NOT allowed to show at both children’s medal finals and a 3’6" equitation final. has that changed? is it different by state or zone? seems very very unfair to me… and just generally like a strange practice.
There are many sports where there are different divisions or sections based on age, experience, etc.
I don’t think it’s unusual or unfair. What are the specs for children’s medal finals? If it’s noticeably lower than the BigEq, then I think it is fair to disallow crossover. Give the younger or less experienced riders a fair shot in a finals.
I could be wrong, but I think for THIS Finals you can’t have competed in a 3’6" final yet, so as long as it’s your first year doing the 3’6" finals, you can compete at THIS Finals and go on to do the 3’6" finals that same season, since the 3’6" finals aren’t until after THIS finals.

that’s what i’m curious about. when i went to childrens medal finals we were NOT allowed to show at the 3’6" level. children’s medal is 3-3’3". the whole point is to give lower level/younger riders the shot at a big final. that is why i think it seems unfair that that happened this year… and it just seems unusual because children’s medal finals is basically a “baby” final to the big eq riders.
I thought the same. I see a name of a kid with a “respected” BNT who showed in the THIS finals and the USET medal. Not sure if it is allowed but agree that it should not be. But then again we have all those big eq. kids winning medals and doing the ponies in the same show.
Wouldn’t that be up to those running the various Childrens Medals? USEF/USHJA may host them (Children’s Medals) at rated shows but don’t run them or keep the point tallies. That’s up to the sponsors and they set their rules.
IIRC we have had a few threads on this topic over the years. Gist was they are not regular rated classes. It’s been with kids wrapping up their last Childrens year stepping up, qualifying late in the season and not running in both all year. Up to those running the Medal class to determine eligibility and enforce it if they chose, I believe they allowed it in those examples. But would not have allowed the kid to continue in the Children’s after the Finals or the next year.
Seems like once you have qualified for a 3’6 medal final that you should no longer be eligible to compete in a Childrens level medal final. to be able to do so, seems to fly in the face of the spirit of the division.
You can’t do the THIS medal if you’ve already done a national final at 3’6" or higher. So someone could do the THIS and then the medal and Maclay in the same year. They could even do the THIS and then the USET East since that’s the weekend after the THIS. But they couldn’t do the THIS if they had done the USET West, the Hunterdon, or the NA Eq Championships (the last assuming that it falls before the THIS).

Talking about a Finals and Finals only they did qualify for too, not continuing to compete in the qualifiers after moving up to the 3’6"-that they definitely can’t do. But they qualified for Finals and are eligible to compete in that one, restricted entry class within the above guidelines.

thanks! strange. i swear it used to be different. that makes me feel a little bit better though!
THIS medal has always been open to riders who haven’t competed in a 3’6" national finals. So a lot of the kids who have done the THIS finals and been in the top placings have already qualified for the year end 3’6" finals and do them in the following weeks. Always seemed a bit odd to me, but it is a nice stepping stone between doing the Children’s hunter division and the big eq classes.
