My kind of horse.
I’m going to go ahead and guess he was roping bulls at a rodeo. You want them that big so they can pull.
Comments said Big Loop Horse Roping, not bulls. I like the horse, very proportionate, not drafty looking. Nice legs, nice hooves in riding horse style. Probably a blast to ride!
Wonder where the height in the line came from? Sure not common in the “usual western breeds” used by most cowboys.
Missed that Western Horseman article on the guy, will have to go back and look it up to learn more information.
Thanks for the picture.
Yup, he’s that big. I thought his name was Dimondi or Diamond. I’m FB friends with the lady who takes a lot of pics of this big boy. She may be on COTH and can say for sure.
Actually a cowboy used to borrow my 14.3h mare in the 60s to pick up at rodeos, and when I watched him throw a loop over a bull that wouldn’t leave the arena I was sure they would die. But the mare knew how to work the angles.
In this picture I’d be inclined to guess team roping horse- just because jumping down off 18h to get quickly to a calf might be fraught with peril!
Yeah, his size might be a detriment to being a calf horse. HA!!
Re: Di Mon De
Di Mon De (registered name) does, indeed, rope calves. And bulls. And horses. And anything else necessary!
He’s a ranch horse primarily and owned by my boyfriend’s son Glen. He’s a “gentle giant” and appears on this month’s cover of Paint Horse Journal, with a photo I took of him and Glen lhttp://phj.apha.com/images/default-source/covers/phj-july-fc.jpg?sfvrsn=0
This is his pedigree, for those interested:

I have hundreds upon hundreds of photos of him and his owner.
And yes, he’s a true 18 hands.
Thanks for the second photo and pedigree. Again, he is a lovely looking horse, well educated and looks to be a blast to ride.
Those Peter McCue through Badger horses are darned good. Thanks for the info.
