She got another fungal bath today. We took her clothes off while she was drying. :flushed:

When we turned them out, she RAN across the pasture. It was good to see.

Oh bless you for taking Matilda and giving her a wonderful life! I’ve enjoyed reading this thread so much. Hopefully she will be all better in no time. She already looks better and so much happier.

I know what you mean. I checked all the local stores and they were out of Red Cell. I’ve always seen that around. They mentioned a supply issue. I finally ordered it from one of the online vet supply companies, but that delays it by a week. I also couldn’t find basic horse vitamins. Tons of hoof supplements and a few cough aids and pain type things, but no vitamins. Has this been a problem lately?

Great, now she just looks dreadfully skinny…before she looked like she’d quit fighting to live besides being a bone rack. Shes headed the right direction.

Supply chain issues are hitting everywhere. Truck driver shortage, factory labor shortage. Might have to do it the old fashioned way with just more calories and time.

This time of year, they are starting to work on producing a winter coat, should see the hair start slipping in about 6 weeks so she probably is going to look worse before better, particularly around the face. Winter coat and skin will likely still be affected by the prolonged malnourishment as her body recovers. But bet her spring coat will be worth waiting for and her skin back to normal.

Thanks for the overview. It helps a lot to know what to expect. Do you have experience in rescuing?

Yup. Observed others being brought back and bought one of my own that was a 2-.

Its a journey with a surprise around every corner. Some pleasant, others not so much.

Now that Matilda is getting increased turnout with the others, she’s showing mild foot soreness. The farrier is coming tomorrow. I’m hoping it’s her shoes, or even an abscess, and not from an old bout of laminitis from when she contracted anaplasmosis.

Is she on a good hoof supplement yet? Often it takes a starved horse a full cycle growing a completely new hoof. Anything to help her body grow a quality hoof plus what nourishes a hoof also helps the skin and hair coat…

Don’t panic. Little doubt previous owners when whatever went wrong with her feet did anything besides dump her. Most things can be managed, starting with regrowing healthy hoof, skin and hair.

Feel free to whine on here when needed, we are here to support you with these not so pleasant surprises on the journey back to health.

Thank you. I really needed that.

I pestered the vet, again, about the slight limp Matilda showed after running yesterday. She said there’s no reason to think navicular would show up like this after she’s been sound. That’s my biggest worry. Second worry is laminitis, but I don’t see any signs, nor does she have pulses or heat in her feet. The answer is probably the condition of her feet. I took pictures for our farrier a couple of weeks ago. He didn’t see anything alarming other than a lousy job and some cracks, but she does need work. Thank goodness he’s coming out tomorrow.

100% whine.

I’d also add that I suspect that she is traveling more around her new field than that paddock she was in. I guess I am not surprised?

Lean on your trusted professionals. She may still need shoes for a bit as she adjusts to…care. Maybe not. Time is your friend and you have a large base of experience here on COTH for getting her through the uncomfortable moments.

Thank you! I want this mare to be okay for so many reasons. If I have to manage a few things, fine, but please don’t let this lead to heartbreak. It’s our boy’s horse. They’ve bonded.

Vet said it might be a minor strain from stiff, unused, new muscling. Give her time.

You could try adding some BL pellets or other devil’s claw product to her diet and see if that helps. It’s easier on their systems than other anti-inflammatories.

I had some great results using for my first mare for arthritis. I’ll definitely keep that in mind, thanks!

Sorry for my ignorance, but what are BL Pellets? (I’m not familiar with the term and want to learn)

I think they mean Bute-less pellets. It has similar ingredients as other natural supplements. I haven’t used that brand (it wasn’t around back then) but the one I did use also had yucca and devil’s claw.

I am pretty sure she is a grey pinto

She definitely has a couple of white patterns making her a pinto. Her tail however shows no grey at the end, which is often very obvious when a horse is greying, and her ears and the other dark areas are very dark. She might be a late greyer, but I’m doubtful.
