Meet Matilda! Pictures 10/1

I bought a cheap t shirt from the university where Maggie is. If someone asks if I went there, I’ll be like, nope. But they saved our pony. 🥹

I did that once…
I had a horse at Cornell and while I was wandering around I went to the book store and bought a T-shirt. I told everyone that this was the most expensive t-shirt I ever bought, or the least expensive part of my horses vet stay, which every way you want to look at it.

 I’ll use that.

When I had one of my horses over at Tufts, they sent home her digital thermometer with a Tufts logo on it.
One of my students remarked on it.
I told them it was a nice thermometer, but it cost me $5K.

A couple more weeks until Matilda’s next trim. Can’t wait. We have a plan to make sure her toes get trimmed back this time. She’ll be more comfy with that. Meanwhile, we have a flex type supplement to start her on for arthritis and bute less pellets seem to be helping a little. Our vet is optimistic. We hope our son can do a little riding this fall.

She looks like a stock horse now. We didn’t know what she was before she put on weight.

I’d be afraid to use it!

After following Bo’s saga, and knowing from personal experience how much a starved horse can change, I’m not surprised.

Did Maggie get her eviction notice from the vet school?

Look who’s home! There’s still some nursing care to do. She needs to eat better. They’re hoping home and family will inspire her. If she’s poky about eating tomorrow, I’ll ask our vet Monday about something like Gastroguard. She’s on probiotics. They stopped the antibiotic (it can cause nausea).

Matilda is about 800 pounds! Vet says 900 is the goal. It’s funny how she gained so fast and now she’s slowed down, but she seems more muscular. She must be transitioning from starvation to normal weight gain. We haven’t changed her feeding regiment, except reducing sugars, (due to laminitis risk). I need to increase fat for Maggie, so I might ask the vet if we should share that with Matilda.

Welcome home lil one! Way to rally!

I think @Heinz_57 has used vitamin B to encourage Bo to eat more? Maybe she can chime in or something to ask your vet!

She been getting red cell. Hmm. Thanks!

Yes, B-12 has been his savior a couple times in the last year. It does take a few days to see any change, though, and she might just need a few days to get her appetite back, too (assuming we are talking about Maggie, not Matilda!).

Maggie, definitely. Prescend really makes them poky eaters.

Matilda has no appetite troubles!

Beautiful shot. It looks like she is starting to fill in!

Matilda and Maggie are both getting a fat boost additive with their low starch feeds. My poor fluffy Mustang will be on ration balancer. After trying to sort out which fat additives are still low on NSCs, I gave up and I’m adding flax instead, lol! Vet says it should work just fine. With just one horse and a pony eating it, I’m buying in small amounts from the natural food store. Our vet said it doesn’t store well. I think this will secure their weight gain before winter.

Matilda is getting flax seed, a joint supplement, hoof supplement, Bute less, and Red Cell.

Maggie is on her Prescend, flax seed, and a hoof supplement.

I’ve become one of those annoying owners with all those supplements. Good thing I do my own feeding.
