Melanie Smith-Taylor

To Fooler, You are so right about Dick Button. I cringed when someone on this thread criticized him.I guess his intensity might be annoying but he so loved the sport he couldn’t help himself and he sure did tell it like it was. I remember the Russian’s dirty skates! I met him a few times and he was (and I assume still is) a really nice man who just adored competative ice skating and did not even try to hide his emotions concerning it.

empty] . Looking back at Velvet’s Chronicle interests demonstrate a chronic complainer that considers what everyone does to be horrible, incompetent, and beneath him/her. Heck, Velvet is an expert in everything…

Yes indeed. That one jumped the shark a long time ago.

Okay, who has the multiple alters? Which one of my stalkers are you?

Honestly, this is ridiculous. I don’t know Melanie Smith Taylor, however I do remember watching her ride, back in the day, and she was better than I (and most people here) will ever be.

You don’t like her commentary? Mute it. Why the vitriol? A comment, or some constructive criticism about her broadcasting talent I could understand , but consider how hateful you sound over such a minor issue. Would you really speak this way if you were discussing your “issue” with her in person?

People do read these forums and/or hear about what is said about them.

I understand that any of us can, at times, get worked up over an issue, but this is not horse abuse, lying, cheating ,drugging or stealing , and I don’t understand this nastiness at all.

I’ve seen several people say this now. What does this have to do with anything?
She was a SHOWJUMPER, and an accomplished one. We are aware of that. Many of us watched her compete. That doesn’t excuse her often inane commentary for the dressage and the eventing.
Seriously, if you guys had to listen to Mary King, Andrew Hoy or Monica Theodorescu give commentary on a Hunter Derby full of inaccuracies and inane comments, you’d be blowing a fuse.

How hard can it be to get either i) a separate specialist for each sport, or ii) someone with a background in all three Olympic disciplines?

No I would not be “blowing a fuse”, I would be hitting the mute button and not going on and on about how terrible they are. I’m sure they would do their best and I’m sure MST is.

Sure, It would be great to hear expert commentary with each discipline. I doubt NBC cares enough to provide it or perhaps it is a budget issue.

Watching a freestyle on mute just shows how little you fans of MST’s dressage commentary know about the sport. :sigh:

Some back story:
ABC carried the Olympics through 1984 - R. Arledge, supposedly, didn’t care for horses so very, very little coverage of OG Equestrian. In 1984 ‘we’ of the US Equestrian community paid US to provide all day, real time XC coverage. I think they were surprised at the reponse.[/QUOTE]

Are you possibly referring to Barcelona in 1992? That year, if you had cable, you could pay $99 and get live coverage of almost all of the events. I taped as much equestrian action as possible and have watched it over and over, and MST provided excellent commentary for the dressage GP.

Are you a Grand Prix rider? Shown in CDI’s? FEI level? Are you really 100 years old and know everything about everything? I’m willing to bet my imaginary Olympic horse that most of the MST haters are low-level riders. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. You don’t like MST’s commentary. I do. Your opinion does not represent the entire universe of NBC viewers. Get over it.

I might add that your opinion ALSO does not represent the entire universe of NBC viewers either. Again, if you don’t like us complaining about MST, you can just stop opening this thread…It’s really that easy.

Of course not! I would have to be blind or delusional to think that. This thread did not come with a warning that it was open only to those who hate MST.

You’ve made your point that you think MST is okay. Glad you are happy with Good enough. Why do you keep opening the thread to berate Velvet et al ?

You only watch the freestyle? I forgot that many people only enjoy the freestyles.

IMHO Melanie Smith-Taylor is doing a fine job with her commentary for people viewing the Olympics that have absolutely no idea what is going on other than horse are either jumping or moving around a ring of some sort. And that is totally our fault. MST was a great rider and NBC hired someone that was at the top of their game. We have a country that doesn’t have the understanding of things horsey because WE have made it that way. Horses in this country are not as big a deal as they are in Europe and other countries, just look at the stands of any competition that is held outside of this country, they are relatively full. WE have done nothing to further our sport, HJ, eventing, dressage and the many others, we make it hard for people to understand and attract the everyday person. We have made horses very elitist to the regular Joe. We have not made it inviting in any manner and it is our responsibility to do something about that and not beat down someone that is doing the best they can. Isn’t it obvious by what is actually aired on the networks? Horses may be a huge part of our lives but for the regular person they are almost mystical. So stop complaining and try to make the whole horse thing more approachable to everyone, be nice, answer questions, educate, and let people interact. For goodness sakes, all the other sports do it. Why can’t we, are we special? Remember not everyone is a horseperson.

Sidebar:

I wish frigging modern pentathlon had MST commentating. These people are idiots.

The BBC commentator is the lady gold medalist in MP from Sydney. She is great.

chancellor, when dealing with the stalker-fake-alters out here always remember that, “Insults are the last refuge of the out-argued.”

There never was any logic behind their arguments to start. It was entirely irrational and emotional. They devolve into insults rather quickly.

I freely admit my comments became more strident, but their comments simply became insults and lost all merit. Time to just walk away from them and let the fake-alters have their histrionics.

The BBC dressage was really good! The commentary was on the money, and when the man was cooing over the British teams rides, she was more cautious. She also was kind when needed, and would other times just be quiet and watch before making a comment. Really well done!

Oh, please. No one’s opinion is valid other than yours? YOU are the one who brought this thread from simple discussion on Melanie’s commentary to nasty insults to her. And no alter here, and who I am is on my profile.

You act like six year olds.

My mistake in listing MST as commentator in 1984.
However I was correct in stating that ABC would not broadcast the XC live because they didn’t think there was an audience and they would lose money. So “we” sent money to ABC to offset the fee. IIRC there was a group/committee who took in all of the checks then paid ABC.

You are correct in 1992 NBC offered the Gold, Silver and Bronze broadcast fees. I had little discretionary income, had job + school then was laid off, so purchasing any of the above was out of the question. I did “listen” to XC day as it was broadcast on our VH1 (I think) cable channel.
