Melanie Smith-Taylor

Oh, please, I would rather listen to Melanie Smith for ten hours than to ten seconds of the irritable incessant complaining on this board. [/QUOTE]

Oh, I don’t think so.

You’ve got about 600 posts to your name, which makes you quite the hypocrite.

do i have enough hours to matter? i’d think quite the other way on an extremely high number of posts, someone has FAR too much time invested in a silly forum?

melanie was her usual ladylike and informative self.

She is ladylike and I agree about not watching too much misery. The commentator I have trouble with is Tim Daggett in gymnastics…he has toned down but he is so negative and critical…my favorite the other night about a bad performance but still an Olympic one…he said it was “beyond mediocre”.

I agree:yes:

:lol::lol::lol: you apparently don’t have enough posts, my dear…^^^^^^

She’s certainly a grating presence on any equestrian broadcast. The annoying part is she comes across as far less knowledgeable than she must be given her background. So the use of imprecise terminology and the awkward reading of human interest factoids that she obviously had no idea about before she read them on some cue card provided by a poor intern is either a misguided attempt to appeal to the non-horsy masses or she’s just the worst equestrian announcer ever. And she only gets worse as the years go on. It’s her job and she’s woefully underprepared. I would cut her some slack if there was any evidence that she was making any effort to provide meaningful commentary. In stead, it’s like standing at ringside listening to someone’s unfunny critical mother.

Except last night, when he and the other commentator jinxed McKayla Maroney by awarding her the gold on the vault as soon as the competition started.

That was so incredibly stupid! Tim Daggett should know better…any athlete should know better.

trafalgar, Here in the Northeast on my NBC channel, there has been an “Olympic Zone” half hour show that show athlete’s back grounds, etc. Last week they had a 5 minute story how the horses go from their home stable to the Olympic stables…Let’s just say there is QUITE a LOT to pack;). I loved seeing the horses’ “passports” as well, the one they showed was quite interesting, the horse had been all over the world.

And OMG, the commentator-Tim Dagget-what an idiot!! Hubby, son, and I watched that vaulting competition…I kept saying “Shut up you’re going to jinx her”…And look what happened. We all agreed the Romanian girl certainly deserved the gold. What’s that saying about counting your chickens??..

Thanks spurlgirl, I am going to see if I can find it…I would love to see that…they have passports? I thought I had seen all the Olympic Zones…I love that stuff!

EXACTLY! We were mad, too - the way he was carrying on I just KNEW poor Macayla was going to mess up. Grrrr… No such thing as a sure thing at the OG.

RE: Equestrian commentary, I have not heard more than five minutes of MST, thanks to watching online. I did get the Brit fellow again today - same as XC day - and I think he’s brilliant, as our friends across the pond would say. Thoroughly enjoyed his witty comments and insider knowledge, and he said something nice about every single pair. I was thrilled for him when GBR won!

Huh? How do my .36 posts per day make me a hypocrite? I never said I didn’t enjoy this board. I was referring to the incessant complaining of a minority. (Incessant means continuous; it doesn’t mean universal )

I opened this thread because I was a huge fan of Melanie Smith and her horses, especially Calypso. Perhaps the title should have included a warning

Thankfully MST has alot more people that DO think she is doing a great job and do find her commentary quite good. I, for one, and thousands of my friends, are glad she is there. In time it will be someone else and when it is it you haters will be hating on them too. There are some people you just cannot please. Those complaining could not do a better job, you just think you can when you practice in front of a mirror or commentate in your shower. Those critics should hurry up and send their resumes to NBC for a spot at Rio. I am sure NBC would love some no-nothing wanna-be as their next commentating hopeful. In the meantime the rest of us are enjoying MST and don’t need your negative comments above a lovely lady doing her job.

I would like to comment on the hair-flying comments. I for one find the Olympics to be the most traditional competition and it is disprespectful to have your hair flying around in such a competition. If we start to lessen the standards of proper dress then it will be much worse in years to come. It takes but a second to put your hair up. I for one find it a disgusting lazy habit. How would you think if dressage riders let their hair hang out and flop around. It takes away from the overall look and picture.

MST is unqualified to comment on eventing and dressage. If they want to keep her for show jumping, fine, but they need to find people who have experience in the other sports to comment on them.

That she referred to the extended walk in the GP test as a “free walk” (completely different movements) and then declared it is put in the test to give them a “break” is really absurd.

How about the comment during eventing dressage where she said “Some people can use the double bridle”. Well, no, they all can.
I don’t understand how ANYONE can think she is any good. She is clearly an idiot when it comes to dressage and eventing.
Even if she is commentating for the masses, it would be really nice if she had some bloody clue about what she was talking about.

I have no dog in this fight since I’m from Canada and we’ve got Nancy Wetmore doing the commentating - and not getting dressage and eventing (it’s like having a former rower announce the triathalon, IMO) - but have to say, Jonesy you must be really popular.

I just loved the BBC commentators because the gave the history of the riders, what horses the rode, and what they had competed in. It was really refreshing!

I liked the BBC commentators too. Maybe MST will keep doing the showjumping but as the dressage and eventing get more popular, NBC will get another expert from those specific disciplines.

I think she probably meant that some people have the educated hands and legs to use a double bridle correctly. Or that some people choose to. She’s not stupid…I highly doubt that she thinks only certain people at that level are allowed to use it.

Not saying that I dis/like her commentary, just pointing that out.
