Micklem Bridles

Would never try one. SOOOO ugly
I like the look, but I am an eventer . I have both mine in one. I use it on my older horse because I had it around (my retired horse preferred it) and it’s easier to clean than a regular bridle:). I’m not sure it makes a difference with him. My young horse seems to like it, but I should go back and try a plain noseband on him now that he has more training.

you leave a generous two fingers width in the noseband? this is two fingers can fit between the jaw and the leather around the entire circumference of the nose - bridge of nose, cheek, underside of jaw, etc.
Yeah, I do.

I don’t think it puts any more poll pressure on than a typical bridle using a flash, drop, or figure 8 noseband. I agree that with a plain cavesson you can create less poll pressure if the cavesson is loose.

Of course you’re free to think so and most people can judge for themselves. The new show bridles are a lot tidier and of course you can put in any browband.

i use it on my horse only because it’s way easier to put the bridle on (bit detachable), didn’t notice a difference otherwise but totally worth it because she can be a pain to bridle.

I use a Micklem on one of my horses who can be a bit fussy in the bridle. It is a nice bridle and while not particularly attractive, I think it has a lot to offer the fussy horse. I adjust it snug but definitely not tight, one finger loose I would say. It never shifts in any way. I have a competition one without any rings and while the look isn’t my favorite, I care most about how my horse performs.

There is definitely no poll pressure. They specifically tell you not to use it with leverage bits, too. It is supposed to be used with snaffles. I have used it with a Beval bit a little, those just have a tiny bit of lift but that is about all the leverage I would use with it. Even then it isn’t really meant for that.

Besides the Micklem, are there any other bridles out there that are claiming to be pressure free or more comfortable for the sensitive horse?
