I have a fantastic farrier in STL who just picked up a large barn in KC and now travels there as well. He has done AWESOME things for both my TBs and is very sweet and patient with my younger/ slightly bratty one. I can PM you if you’d like.
All PMs welcome!! Thank you both
Mroades a poster here either trains or owns a facility in or around KC or has at some point unless I’m just having a brain fart. I live about an hour east of Kansas city and while I’m not in the land of h/j, traveling is so very easy here! The national equestrian center is going through great renovations and I hear the footing is in the works of being repaired/redone.
Do look for a place with an indoor if you plan to ride year round. I’d be happy to give you details on where I am but it does not fit all of your musts. Limited turn out for stall boarded horses.
With the way my horse has been getting hurt the past 15 months, I’m seriously considering limited turnout for him too. Or at least solo turn out.
I grew up as a kid riding at the NEC (back when it was called the Expo Center). I’m glad they’re fixing that place up. It always had potential to be really nice but our trainer never let us show in anything over 3’ there after seeing slip and falls around corners in the indoor one too many times in the jumpers or packed hard footing outside.
I’m always open to options although I think I’m mostly looking on west and south sides of KC as I’m looking at jobs in Riverside and Overland Park and really want to avoid too much of a drive.
Alas it has been a year since I was in Kansas City. Starting over in Florida now…sigh. Kirin Farm (Kris Cheyne) and White Horse (Julie Pickering) are on the south side and both do local to AA shows. I was on the northeast side, almost no HJ stuff going on up there.
I’m jealous that you’re back in Florida, not jealous that you’re starting over. We’ll be moving back in roughly 2 years once our service commitments are both over. I’m so ready to be home!
OP, the facility I’m at does have phenomenal care and the manager has years of experience but h/j facility we are not. If you want information let me know. There’s also Freedom Farm’s just north of Warrensburg which is a small town about 45 minutes out of the city. They are a h/j facility and closer that where I’m at to KC proper. I board at Fischer’s Stables in Sedalia and I really love the low key facility. Board is CHEAP and the care, is great! We have an indoor and outdoor with trail access as well. We’re also only 10 minutes from the State Fair grounds which host open shows and I’ve seen a couple of dressage shows there as well. The only thing I haven’t seen there is jumping. I’ve hauled to the Royal grounds (1.5hrs) and the NEC (2.5 hours) as well as hauling out for bigger trails.
I will definitely look at Fischer’s Stables and Freedom Farms! My main priority is care. We’re coming back off a soft tissue injury and frankly don’t know if jumping will be in the workload again or not.
Thank you for the suggestions!
What part of KC will you be in? The big name fancy equine vets are Strain Equine and Wilhite and Frees that both have fully functioning equine hospitals. And of course the vet school for when you need someone really smart  But depending on what part of KC you will be in, there are some really great smaller equine vet practices too. I use Dr, Brisbane and really like him a lot. If you let me know what area you will be in, I can try to point you in the right direction for farriers.
Oops, I didn’t read the whole thread before commenting. I see you will be in the west and south area. I’m in the Northland so my suggestions may not help. For farrier, I use Russell Swanson and I like him a lot, but he may not travel that far south. For chiro, Dr. Emily McLeod is great and I believe she does travel around all the barns in KC.
I loved Dr Emily!!!
I grew up in Kansas City and you won’t be disappointed. Kirin (Chris) and White Fox (Julie) are both excellent. Seven Oaks is also good, although large. There is wide variety in terms of turn out and showing, but there are good shows in the area and several barns travel to WEC in the winter and CO in the summer which is a nice option. I have also lived in Chicago and Atlanta and can say the traffic in Kansas City is absolutely nothing compared to those cities. You can get almost anywhere you want in less than an hour.
I’m so excited! Thanks for the recommendations. Planning on picking a barn here in the next coming days. I’m happy to hear there are plenty of options for farriers, chiros and vets. That hasn’t been true for everywhere I’ve lived… hah
On a bit of a different note, anyone have recommendations for affordable board in the area? If my guy continues to stay NQR, I’m thinking of pulling his shoes and turning him out. Pasture is an option but I’d much prefer some kind of paddock situation where he has a shed and could potentially live alone, but near others so he could be fed individually. I’ve seen some places like Dunrovin Equestrian in Olathe does this. Any other recommendations?
Also, still interested in farrier reqs!!
Thanks!
You might try posting an ISO/Recommendations in the Kansas City Professional Horseman’s Association [KCPHA] FB page. I really like Dunrovin (owner is nice and my old trainer works with them)… can’t think of any other options off the top of my head that have room right now.
