I think I might go with the equiband and surefoot pads for now.
Unless you want to get the big kit of surefoot pads, see if his massage therapist will let you try them. They tend to have preferences. I would suggest the soft (blue) ones, maybe the wedge, for a horse with stifle issues to use behind. But if he doesn’t like that then you might want to start with the firm ones first. They are good for activating stabilizer muscles, but the horse might want to use them to rest and relax the hind end first (e.g. with the wedge). And progress later to using them for strengthening.
I had an equiband, and while I liked the concept I hated the saddle pad it was so stiff and bulky. I ended up selling it and just buying a roll of theraband and tying it to two clips lol, I can put it around the butt and clip onto the surcingle. Just my personal opinion and maybe because I have a pony the saddle pad really seemed like too much on her.
I had a red light pad for my mare’s stifle … while she seemed to like it and it maybe helped to “warm her up” … it didnt seem to have any lasting benefits. And I had to buy stifle wraps in order to actually hold it on her stifle haha. The “itty bitty” one you linked above really is quite small, I had the “small” one and it just barely did the job.
Love my back on track mesh sheet. Surefoot pads is a great idea, especially for stifles. One more idea just for fun - a massage gun?
Oh thanks for more info about the red light pads. I think I’m going to skip that at least for now. I think it will be a pain in the butt to use.
I actually do have a massage gun and my horse loves it. I don’t use it enough probably but I’m going to start trying to use it once a week at least. He gets professional massages and other body work but I figure that might help keep him soft in between. Besides he seems to enjoy it either way so it doesn’t seem to hurt.
We did just get an email from SmartPak that their therapies section is 20% off. So I might pick up some back on track stuff if not for my horse maybe for my arthritic family members lol.
You’re the only other person I’ve heard that also likes the Equiband saddle pad too! I love it, even if it’s kind of a more boring color since I’m kind of boring lol
The pad is kind of stiff and a weird shape. I agree. I love the system overall but if I could I would redesign the pad itself.
I could do with a more fun color, but I love how sturdy the pad is, and I love the square edge. It has to be sturdy, really, to get good stitches in for those straps!
I really like the 100X EquiLaser. I bought it this spring when my mare came up with sore hocks and I was looking for something to support her as she develops better collection. She would also tend to scrape her teeth on the wall just as I was putting the saddle on, and I’d had saddle fit checked, bodyworker check her back etc. After using the laser along each side of her spine a couple times a week, she has almost completely stopped the tooth scraping thing. Both my girls really like it and I love that I can use it on any bodypart that seems to need it. It’s come in handy for the random puffy tendon, shoulder that got kicked etc. and my chiro vet supports me using it. It has a 90 day money back guarantee, which is why I took the plunge to begin with.
I have almost all the SureFoot pads and like those too, but find that I have to catch my horses at the right time when they’re “into it” otherwise they just walk off. I feel like I can treat with the laser and have an effect whether they are tuned in, or just munching hay or whatever, and it can help me pinpoint where and what they might be feeling based on reactions to the laser.
Eagle ProSix. And Surefoot pads.
