It’s possible Bowie is incorrect but, they could pass as DHHs to me. DHHs have as much variation within the registry as any other horse. My farrier has one that could double as a dressage sire. He has the highest score to date in a KPWN-HH stallion test.
True. I saw DHHs in Holland and they looked like Saddlebred fine harness horses. Very fancy.
I am so glad they have made it to your pastures!
Got a feeling they are both halter broke but currently shell shocked a little feral from their recent experiences.
I daresay they may have been handled enough to get their feet done and some other basics installed. Hoping this turns out to be the case.
One thing I am sure of, they are going to be so shiny you will have to wear sunglasses to look at them.
I don’t know if this is helpful information, but when my trainer friend picked up the 4yo TB (who is doing perfectly fine under saddle, by the way), he said my horse was on a trailer from Kentucky. There was very little info on my horse - 4yo, TB, Bourbon County Ky - but that there’s a guy who brings a trailer load of horses from that region just about every week…and that’s why some out-of-place breeds show up in Bowie - the DHH, all the Morgans/Morgan crosses, the Friesians, etc.
These beginning stages are always so sweet!! I hope you have a good ladder because you might need it boys are most definitely going to be putting on some proper height with good feed!
@rockymouse when do you get to bring your boy home? Sounds like he was the perfect choice!
Heh. We have the same farrier! I’m wondering if he’s going to do an open house this year.
By any chance were you at the driving clinic at Low Places a couple of months ago? His dad is really interesting.
I didn’t go, I was out of town. Did you go? Small world isn’t it? Billy is the best - if he has an open house I’d go! I’d love to meet his stallion after hearing so many amazing things about him. Even smaller world, my sister works part-time for Low Places.
My trainer friend is putting at least 30 days on the young TB, who really does look to be four years old. He will stay longer if needed.
So I might get to meet him/have him home in a month-ish or two-ish, depending on schedules and our ability to travel - he’s all the way across the state from me.
But my friend says he’s calm and sweet and has a rocking chair canter, but doesn’t want to spend much time at the trot. Says he knows just the raw basics - no lateral, no moving off of pressure, no moving just the front or hind end. That’s okay!
IMO a blank slate is the best kind to have. No bad habits to undo
Thursday Update:
No pix yet today because I left my phone in the house at lunch, but I’ll get some at dinner time.
The boys are looking more and more lively, less stressed/droopy posture compared to a few days ago. They look slightly less snotty today, too. Eating, drinking, pooping like the champions they are.
We’re still giving gold stars for touches. I was able to briefly touch Bert’s shoulder for the first time at lunch. Ernie’s still only accepting of body touches (no face plz!) if there’s a sufficient food distraction present. Since they are on the 3 hays a day meal plan right now, I get at least that many opportunities to barter a trade for positive touching interactions and they now approach with curiosity when I go in the paddock instead of walking off.
If I squint real hard, I think Bert may have put on a pound or so already…
I had the pleasure of riding a friend’s DHH at a distance ride. He was an absolute BLAST to ride and super athletic.
I could imagine Bert or Ernie trucking on down the trail!
With those teeth, are you thinking Bert is 2? So he’s a 2023 foal?
If so, you may need some bigger tack.
They were listed as 2 year olds. I’m not good at aging by their teeth, but I wonder if he’s a yearling.
I’m dying here! That looks like so much fun. I miss the trails. You had a lot of bridges to cross and your horse handled them like a champ.
I’m not an expert by any means, but I think it’s a pretty reasonable guess!
You’re going to need some very large halters.
Bill Duffy?
They are so lucky! and they are going to be gorgeous!
Ohhhhhhhhhh Ernie is winning me over. I admit to an initial preference for Bert, with his quality of movement and being bay-with-white, my favorite, but there’s just something about little Ernie
