More New Horses: Bert and Ernie

Are we ready for treats yet? IME nothing helps with head shyness like a big fat carrot they have to take out of your hand…assuming they know what carrots are?

I pick Ernie, my favorite color.

Bert definitely has the “classically attractive” thing down that most people are going to favor :joy: He’s also not built as upright as Ernie, which should make him more versatile as far as discipline. He’s not so up-headed that he’d look out of place in a hunter ring

Ernie, on the other hand… he’s clearly going through a phase :joy: but I think in the long run he will be a pretty majestic dude once he grows into that long head. He’s got no shortage of neck, either.

@findeight I haven’t tried carrots yet, but they do like the Standlee Apple Berry cookie cubes. They just won’t take them from my hands - only in the tub.

Bert is by far the more curious of the two right now, and more willing to engage in fair touches for food. Ernie, on the other hand, is pretty sure it’s a trick not worth his time and would rather just tolerate the touching while he eats simultaneously. I can touch more of Ernie, neck to haunches, but only while he’s eating. Bert just let me touch his neck for the first time this morning, which is HUGE.

That makes sense! I can’t recall, has he been thoroughly checked for a microchip? Speaking of which, looks like the just got another load in of mostly Friesians and Morgans this week. They aren’t up on the website yet with individual listings, I just saw a video of them in the pens on FB.

I did email the ADHHA registry - I figured IF they might’ve been registered, or from registered stock on either side, that would be the most likely place to check - and they told me they can search their DNA databases for a direct match or parental matches. So once I can safely retrieve hair samples, we’ll send that off and see what comes up if anything.

They’re both so handsome! And hopefully turn out to be a great deal! Both were under $1000 right?

Everything they have now is over $1000 plus.

Yes, their original listings were at $1560 each. Then they got cut in half - rumor has it that a particular rescue (who I won’t name, because they are sketchy and LOUD and I don’t want any association with them) paid half their fees when they went on the last call list to try and help them get new homes. I don’t know what the truth is, but regardless of who or how they ended up half price - it enabled me to bring both of them here instead of just one.

Ahh ok- I couldn’t figure out why 2all appearances sound, good looking ones were so much less! Well they both got lucky! Can’t wait to watch their progress on here!

Sigh.

Bert’s new thing. I’ve OFFERED to spray him down with the hose like I do for the other two that like it and promised to be gentle, but he insists on going swimming instead.

I have one that swims! :woman_facepalming:t3:

We built a grid of wood that zip ties to the top. Keeps the cribbers and the swimmers from having any fun, and is super cheap.

But also you can just send the swimming pony to me - he’d fit right in!

I have two others that play in their waters :joy: one loves the hose, and as long as I spray him down when I fill it he usually doesn’t dump it out. The other hates the hose…so I just deal. I’m out there 3-4x a day anyway, minimum, nobody is without water for long.

I swear I’m going to dig a pond in one pasture one of these days and just put the swimmers all together.

So he does the crawl fine…but how is his breaststroke form? :face_with_monocle::rofl:

I had a sprinkler I’d put in the pasture for my water dog (gelding). He would stand under the spray for hours. Drawback was his coat bleached out from a rich dark reddish brown to a sunburnt sienna, but he was happy.

Yes, Bill Duffy!

Yes I went. It was a cold day so I was happy everything was inside. Bill Sr is a fountain of knowledge for all things driving, and had been buying out the stock of some old harness shops when they went out of business. I hope he has a warehouse…

They had hoped to bring Macho, but he was entirely too hormonal from breeding season, so they brought a pretty DHH mare instead, and a modern type (hot!) Clydesdale gelding. I still am surprised at how tall and narrow DHH can be. And forward. Very forward.

I’ve loved Ernie’s big ol’ head from the beginning  I do like Bert too. I have a horse that “swims” and thankfully the barn has drinking posts so there’s no water trough swimming pool for him

Mine LOVES water. Any water. Anywhere. It’s a bit much sometimes!

It has character :joy: really, it’s just that it’s so LONG…

I’m sure he will grow into it.

I was permitted to scratch some itchy spots!

From certain angles, I see definite (but small, obviously) weight gains:

Bert’s in a mood today, getting after Ernie more than usual about being “in the way” now that he’s hogging all the attention. :joy:

Although Ernie’s body suggests he’s quite young, that profile picture of him as you scratched him makes me think he’s an old soul in a young body.

Ernie’s head is chock full of good sense, that’s why it’s long. I prefer a horse with a big head and even bigger ears.

The Bowie guy said he did not have a microchip, but I dunno how thorough that search was…

I was way behind on the Bowie thread and just caught up on it. Heinz’s post progression cracked me up, especially knowing the ending. Paraphrased:

Hmm, he’s cute but I couldn’t possibly…
No, really, the inn is full.
My husband would kill me!
I mean, maybe if he just showed up…
I do have all this grass…
Screw it, might as well take both!

You (and hubby actually) are seriously a saint! I’ve Venmo’ed you a dribble as well. Give those boys scritches from me!
