Right? When all those pieces eventually come together, he’s going to be a hunk!
Omg that giant puppy face, I can’t. So dang cute.
Shall I put you down for notification when he becomes “available”?
Giraffe Relaxation exercises at work! His natural posture is a little ewe-necked, so we’ll be doing some dedicated groundwork to address it.
Unfortunately, I have not yet found a cookie that either one of them really likes - and taking it from my hand is a whole other separate thing. So he gets all the 'good boy’s and scratches, plus he enjoys a good base of ear massage so I throw in one of those when I want to make a really big deal.
I’m no hunter rider, unless you count winning all my classes at the schooling show my instructor put on when I was 14 I mostly stick to eventing/dressage… but I think he would fit right in as a hunter. Neither horse has the excessive knee/hock action that you sometimes see on harness types (maybe that’s why they ended up in the discard pile?)
YES if somehow you don’t get attached forever
He can come play trail horse and local hunter along with my TBs!
But seriously, I found cookies took a while to become acceptable from my more… unhandled ones. But crinkly peppermints in the individual wrappers? Instant hit. Because who wants healthy?
Yeah, I have one who started out life as a feral horse and it took a long time for him to even consider taking anything by hand. I’ve found a few things he likes, but to this day he is still very suspicious of any new treats. He refuses peppermints
My goal is not to get attached to Bert forever I have promised DH that some horses will move along to new homes later this year, which ones is still TBD. I have an eclectic collection of horses and I love them all, but realistically I’d be insane to try and keep 6 horses in work by myself and also do my job, keep the house in order, and maintain the property.
So many people love peppermints.
Lemon drops!!!
German Horse Muffins.
Did you try Ginger Snaps?
Fruit strips/leather !
All three of my boys thought I was trying to poison them with these. And they love almost any type of treat!
Seriously? Those were my horse’s birthday cake this year. But then, he vetoes ginger snaps (eh, more for Mom). He’ll also take you with him for a Fig Newton and the barn staff found out the other week he likes Jolly Rancher Ropes.
I had the same problem.
I stupidly bought the huge bag, thinking that my horses would love them, they like everything like that.
Wrong.
They would not eat them.
Even left in their feed tub, I would find them there still in the morning.
I gave the huge bag to a friend, whose horse loves them.
How strange! Every horse I’ve offered them to scarfs them up.
Mine will eat the mint ones, but even then, they aren’t a favorite.
I appreciate all the treat suggestions, I will work through them in time!
Today was Bert’s turn to get all the attention - I’m not sure he wanted it but we made some progress, nonetheless. A few steps forward, a few steps back.
My mare will eat just about anything (she’s particularly fond of Twizzlers) but she turns herself inside out for a German muffin. She knows the sound the bag of German muffins makes and starts talking when she hears it. They’re expensive so they’re her special occasion snacks.
My horse came from the track and had never been given treats. I just started throwing the carrots in his feeder, and once he realized the carrot was tasty, he let me hand feed him.
I had one that had never had treats. I won him over with Mrs. Pastures, and once he discovered those he was suddenly open to other kinds of goodies. It also worked with another friend’s horse that had the same problem.
Tough to grow up alongside a handsome redhead with chrome, people go to them first.
My Diva mares favorite treat was Stud Muffins, alfalfa, molasses and very fragrant-smell it on your hands for hours.
For the longest time, my mustang would not eat an Apple Ass treat. She’d roll it around in her mouth and then spit it out until one day she saw Woodrow scarfing them up so I offered one to her, after thoroughly inspecting it with both nostrils, she took it and bit into it. Her reaction was priceless. Her eyes got big as she munched it down and then was all over me for another. From then on, she was hooked on them.
