Most Famous Horse Painting?

every time I have been to London I have gone to see Whistlejacket. I sit down and just look.

Stubbs invented and perfected the art form. In this painting he captured every essence of “horse”

This Van Dyke is also at the gallery and a favorite. If you watch Downton Abbey there is a cousin of this painting in the dining room

Whistlejacket came first to my mind as well.

Wasn’t Death Dealer a Molly Hatchet album cover?

The Napolean at St Bernards Pass(?) could be more famous because it’s used in Courvoisier Cognac ads?

Just to really date myself, it took me a long time to find the above link. Apparently those ads were from the 1970s! That says a lot for a painting that I remembered it from that long ago and the item it was used to advertise.

My all time favorite painter is Munnings. Some of my favorites:

That’s my favorite Munnings. If I had to pick one… which is nearly impossible.

Was in London a couple of years ago and saw Whistlejacket. What an incredible painting! Loved that the artist studied equine anatomy before painting it. Bought and framed a copy of it for a friend who is a DVM. Would love to have it in my home!

Whistlejacket is my nomination. With regard to “End of the Trail,” it is a statement piece that doesn’t even show on my radar as equestrian art. Though it is ubiquitous, and possibly one of the most copied art themes in Western art, it represents…defeat. That may not be what the artist intended, but it’s how I read it. Another Bonheur print that perhaps did not achieve the distribution of the horse fair, but loved by me the first time I saw it - the Norman Sire. Thanks to a flea market, I have it now.

I’ve never seen that image. There is virtually no info on the internet about it. There are so few Bonheur horse images out on the Web. (or at least few that come anywhere close to the outstanding imagery of the Horse Fair) I’d love to see a picture of it.

Here’s a link to a teensy weensy picture of it:

Oddly enough, I didn’t have that much trouble a couple of years ago finding prints of it online. It’s as if it was purged from the internet! I’d think I was losing my mind except that the tiny picture I found IS the same as the print I bought. I first saw it years ago in a 16x20 or thereabouts size at a saddle shop in Walla Walla, WA. I have a much smaller version for my own.

I just found another depiction: https://www.google.com/search?q=rosa+bonheur+prints+horse&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=hLPcVN_rBtO4ogSu9oHADg&ved=0CEcQsAQ&biw=1280&bih=538#imgdii=&imgrc=qnZjogHea3GieM%253A%3BU7ycbyTgo8FJ8M%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fupload.wikimedia.org%252Fwikipedia%252Fcommons%252F3%252F34%252FRosa_Bonheur-A_Monsieur_le_Colonel_Cody.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fcommons.wikimedia.org%252Fwiki%252FFile%253ARosa_Bonheur-_A_Monsieur_le_Colonel_Cody.jpg%3B4326%3B5841

I always thought of this one:

The first one I thought of after Whistlejacket was Horse and Train
