Moving to southern missouri any advice

Candyappy,
Thanks for the info on the vet and farrier. I’m very fortunate that my horses have good feet. I know what it’s like to have a horse that needs a technical farrier care.

Viranh,

That’s what I understood from your post. I’m fortunate my current horses are very easy to shoe. I completely understand horses that need more technical care.

My current vet is the same with the x-rays. When I needed more specialized care I had to travel, but only an hour.

I’m grateful you told me about the trade-off. I’m a concerned at being away from a good vet clinic. This is a really hard decision.

There are some nice areas that are within about an hour of either St. Louis or Columbia, or even both. Then you’d be close to one or two great equine hospitals, and within a close enough range of the big barns to get saddle fitters and good farriers. I found Rolla to be unfortunately a little too far, but there are closer options that will feel rural (and be reasonably priced) but will be within range of a variety of services.

FYI: The vets at MidRivers have portable x-ray machines (and ultrasound) that do digital images. I am a current client.

Viranh,

Thanks for the advice, I’m going to check them out. I was so surprised Rolla was a little to far out of the way. I just assumed a town near the highway would be easy for professionals to get to, and the town seemed big enough to have an equine presence. Yours is exactly the input I am looking for on this forum. Thank you.

MidRivers sounds awesome. Thank you.

I just looked up their web site. Wow, what what a wonderful clinic!!

Yeah, I was out of their farm call range. It was my local that only had film x-rays. MidRivers is a great vet practice with a ton of nice equipment. That’s why I hauled from 2+ hours away to go to them.

Gotcha–I thought you were saying MidRivers didn’t have an x-ray. My horses have certainly used it on several occasions  .

From looking at the MidRivers website it looks like they have everything!!! Their site is amazing.

I lived in MN for several years ( in between all my years in MO) and MO is much easier.

I think that was the lameness vet I was thinking of.

We are looking at a property that is not close to MidRivers but is at least close to main roads (which is not the case in some properties we looked at).

As for the weather, I’m relieved you said it’s easier. It’s just got to be easier. Other than a horse or human emergency, I can wait a day or two to venture out if there is an ice storm or significant snow. I guess I should bring my snowblower, just in case. :expressionless:
