Mowing - tractor vs mower

Beg to disagree. Depends on the machine. I have a Scag Turf Tiger and it is made to pull “things” like a my very big Lawn Doctor leaf vac. Scag makes a tow hitch that bolts to the back of the mower. But as I said in my comment the weight of the load should be limited so as not to cause premature failure of the hydro-pumps. Adding an after market hydro oil cooler is worth the money also. It will prolong the life of the pumps and wheel motors.

I also disagree - our mower is/was the top of the line for the commercial mowers - so maybe other brands/models might not fare so well. Our particular model has blades, snow blowers, and other various equipment attachments that could have been added. I have been pulling the drag, seeder and weed sprayer for 13 years without issue.

Are you talking a zero-turn mower or a “garden tractor” type mower? I would be interested to see the snow blower that could attach to a zero turn. I can’t picture how that would work.

We tow with our ZT’s all the time - but only things that “roll easy”, not anything with resistance. Trailers, boom sprayers, the Newer Spreader, etc. Heaviest thing we tow is probably ~500lbs. and that is the boom sprayer when it is full. But it rolls so easy I don’t worry about it.

I have never heard of a weed wiper and this looks like it could work. Thank you so much!!!

Yes they do! They are great for smooth flat paddocks, Tractor and finish mower or bush hog better for terrain, thick grass.

So you killed a zero turn? I’ve killed a few riding mowers but the swisher takes up so much room in the equipment shed that if a zero turn would mow the bumpy rutted paddocks without dying I’d consider getting one.

Depends on the make/model of the Z-T. Commercial brands are made much more stout, But they comes with a higher price tag. New Z-T under $4-5,000 are made for the weekend warrior that only has a smallish lawn. IMO they will get beat up quickly when used for farm stuff.

I mow a couple of 4-5 acre paddocks with a 61 Scag Turf Tiger, Extremely well made. Yes, there are areas of the paddocks that get very bumpy. Which may require a lower ground speed. My seat has pretty good suspension and I just ride out the rough areas. Not that big a deal to me.

I use the ZT on the small padlocks around the house. It gives a nice finished look Easier to mow in a tight spaces and less wear and tear on the grass compared to using the big stuff, 16’ JD Flexwing, 8’ swingblade. (aka bushhogs).

I paid $3,000 for my Scag and had to replace the hyro-pumps the following year. It’s a little under powered having only 25hp to work with. I “cut-in” the fence perimeter of my big fields and paddocks with. Saves on possibly hitting/breaking a fence post when mowing close to the fence with the big stuff. The ZT makes for short work mowing around our outside course jumps.

@gumtree Thank you much! How high does it mow? I don’t want to mow below 6",

I didn’t totally kill the zero turn, but its not as hardy as my tractor/finish mower combo. I also think its horribly uncomfortable to ride on compared to my 40 horse diesel John Deere tractor!

Mine tops out at 6". Most ZT are 5" when I was looking around. The other 2 brands that I see a lot of people using on a “large scale” property is Grasshopper and Xmart. I love ZTs. I have had a couple of small riding/garden mower/tractors I would never go back.
