You should look up the Russian fox experiment (Dmitri Belyaev). It’s pretty interesting.

That was a fascinating experiment-my kids watched it with me and we were just commenting on it the other day b/c I have a batch of orphan bunnies and one of them looked like a cottontail while the rest were just feral domestics. The cottontail was always the most wild, wouldn’t take the bottle and was much more shut off from the others and then today he made a break for it out of the cage door and got killed by the dog. The rest of the buns are broken whites…
We have a fox family (mom, dad, and 3 kits) who have a den in a nearby pasture and come play in the ring at dusk when no one’s riding. They also try to “play” with some of the horses (and generally get chased). I have never seen foxes so close to people. They’re wary of us on foot, but if you’re on horseback you can ride up pretty close to them. Fascinating.
