My first LQ trailer

Well we made the leap! I traded in my 3 horse bumper pull for a 4 horse living quarters. I also traded in my 2500 ram hemi for a ram 3500 dually instead.
It’s a 2022 Bison Ranger with a 10 foot short wall. I’m excited about it but also very cognizant about my
Lack of knowledge when it comes to maintaining a house on wheels. I was considering the werm flooring or poly last but poly last can’t be found in south Texas anywhere and the werm flooring would create standing urine puddles.
So we just have the mats for now.
I was told that merhow is now that manufacturer of Bison and so the quality should be improved for those that have had horror stories.
I can tell you that the water tank is now stored under the trailer instead of on top of the floor under the couch where it used to be.
It runs on both gas and electric for RV camping and dry camping which I thought was cool. I plan on painting the roof with the reflective and protective clear coat that’s for horse trailers. Because it’s so long it doesn’t exactly fit under my carport entirely but some is better than not at all!

I plan on trading it in every 4 years for warranty purposes.

Interested to hear tips and tricks from veteran LQ owners. Storage hacks. Dos and don’ts. ELIA5.

WERM will not create standing urine puddles if your trailer is pitched properly (eeeeeever so slightly nose high). Plus, mine has small drain holes drilled into the corners that let liquid out.

Otherwise, I am ignorant to proper living quarters, but man that’s a nice looking rig. Congrats!

Nice upgrade! I didn’t know that Merhow was making these now! How is the horse space? I love the Merhow design for the swing panels between the horses and that would be the main reason for me to always get a Merhow in the future. But if they’re the same in the Bison trailers - I may have to keep my eye out.

For LQ - oh boy where do I start. If you have to buy a generator make sure it can handle the load of running your AC unit plus the microwave. Ours isn’t beastly enough to do both and will pop the breaker on the generator. The AC unit draws a lot of amps to start up. Oh and you may need to get different plug conversions if you’re hooking up to a generator or a camping spot - check your power cord and get what you think you need - we have like 4 different ones for varying situations. . Get yourself a hose for the fresh water tank in case you need to fill it away from home. Depending on where you live, you may need to winterize the water lines so they don’t freeze. If you live south where it doesn’t get below freezing - you’re probably ok. Make sure you get RV/Camping toilet paper - it degrades differently than the stuff at home. There’s black tank additives you’ll want to look into as well. I always have a pair of nitrile gloves on hand for emptying the black tank at our local camping place. If you ever have to take the batteries out make sure you take a picture of the wiring to each battery before removal - they have to be connected in the correct order for charging and what not. Lastly, if you have dogs that will be staying with you, I got a temperature monitor for the trailer through Animalarm. You get a text message if the trailer gets too hot or too cold depending on your set points. It’s given me peace of mind after one time someone unplugged my trailer and didn’t plug me into another outlet correctly. My dog was in there and it was 85F! I was pissed.
Sorry for the word vomit and congratulations! Let me know if you have any questions too - I’ve been doing the living quarters thing for 10 years now!

I think you meant to quote OP.

The stupid reply feature in this forum will be the source of future ulcers.

Please triple check the axle sizing. Rick Wallace’s 4 horse bison had undersized axles and fell apart at every possible place. Bison has been bought and sold many times and that never bodes well for quality. Thor is who brought the latest bells and whistles of electric stuff. I can’t find evidence that merhow owns them, just vague “we now have horse smart owners”…but fixing the ills of an oft traded cash cow isn’t quick or cheap.

I would rather have 4 exiss (another mid range trailer) than 1 bison. Their reputation is terrible for good reason. Sorry to be such a downer :frowning:

I don’t have a LQ but I do have WERM, and it’s great. I have one that pees in the trailer every time, so I do use shavings to help with clean up. Because of horses like him, I especially love not having to pull mats. Easy to hose out periodically (bedding removed of course).

Huge congrats!! If you’ve never had a LQ, its honestly just the best! We’ve had one before they were popular and in fact sent a 4 horse head to head to be converted into a LQ as they were almost impossible to find 25 years ago. Now that was a process…

But going to a horse show and waking up early or feeding late is priceless. No hotels to drive back and forth to is worth the money to me to have a LQ.

We live in Ontario, Canada, so our trailer gets stored for the winter and gets winterized. Since we get freezing temps, we need to drain our water lines and use RV antifreeze in the lines so they don’t burst in the cold weather.

The best tips for maintenance would be to look at or speak with RV/camping people. They would have some great tips as well! Keeping it out of the sun (like you are doing) is good as well. We paint our roof and seal the outside edge with an RV tape every couple of years to prevent leaking. We bought some wheel covers that go on all of our 6 tires during the winter to protect them from the sun. We don’t have any sheds/storage where we can keep our trailer (52’ long) so it has to stay out in the sun (though we wish we could store it!!).

Enjoy!
