Make sections about 1 inch and braid. Get a heavy metal nut and tie it into the braids in the bottom half. Afro Sheen- aerosol spray from Walmart or Beauty supply - starting an inch or so away from the roots- you don’t want to attract dirt to where the hair meets the skin and start rubbing.
If you decide to be brave, I made the plunge and roached my guys mane and I love how neat and tidy it looks.
Wow Foxglove! Looks like I’ve found the expert on this subject. My horse is out 24/7, so I can’t do the sleezy step. I’ll give the gel step a try and see if I can get things going in the right direction, literally.
Try shampooing then conditioning, but leave in the conditioner. I do this nearly every week and my horse always has a silky soft, smooth mane/tail. Even my Icelandic’s thick mane was smooth. I also braid the mane.
Leave it braided in thick, but tight, braids to help train it to one side. I’ll leave it for 2 or 3 days at a time when it’s getting unruly. This will have the added benefit of thinning it out a bit if the hair is really thick.
I like to use mineral oil in a spray bottle to tame particularly thick/long manes. I will spray it liberally on to the mane while its laying on the side I want it to be on and then use a hair brush to work it through the hairs and flatten things down.

I also LOVE this hair moisturizer product:
The bottle is concentrated, so you can put just a bit in a spray bottle and add water 8:1 and spray that on the mane, too.

You can flat-iron it, I know a lot of the Western Pleasure people do.
