my new turtle arrived missing a leg

I made a Go Fund Me page, and you can just go to read what happened. i am so shocked that the seller won’t pay the vet bills. * ETA link was removed and so i tried to copy and paste story on here as it happened.

I purchased a turtle online from a very reputable tortoise dealer. I purchased a female Three-Toed Box Turtle. When I opened the package, i discovered the turtle was a female Gulf Coast Box turtle, and not what i asked for. Upon further inspection, it was discovered that the turtle that was sent to me was missing a leg and the bone was sticking out!! The bone looked fresh and i rushed her to the vet. Luckily, a turtle specialist works in a nearby town and i was able to see her. The turle would need an amputation. They put her on Morphine and got her out of pain and stablized her for surgery. The cost of the surgery was Much higher than i had hoped and I went home and left her at the vet to be cared for. I called the seller who was shocked ( or so he acted) at selling me the wrong type of turtle and that the foot came off in transit. He told me his internet was down but that we would talk later and he would reimburse me.

The Vet told me the leg had started to heal around the bone. Therefore what happened was that something like a string or thread got caught around the leg, and cut off the blood supply. the leg slowly died and the turle was carrying it around while the leg was covering the bone. While in the transport bag, the claws of the dead leg had caught on the cloth and pulled the leg off of the bone. After her Surgery, We Named her ILENE. ( I Lean)

I sent copies of the vet bill to the seller and when he responded to me, he decided to only pay me the cost of buying her and shiping her. He is refusing to pay me back for the expensive surgery that saved her life.

[edit]

Holy cow, that’s terrible. Thank you for taking care of little Ilene and getting her the care she needs. What a scumbag seller!!

the thing that upsets me is that he had a 5 star rating and everyone raved about him. so i didn’t buy from him unknowlingly. i thought this guy was an upstanding person.

Why did you not out by giving seller’s name? Afraid of repercussions?

PM me your vet’s name and phone # and I’ll call him/her with a little cash on my debit card.

I’d be shouting the seller’s name out everywhere. If you had returned the turtle, it would have been destroyed.

aw poor thing :frowning:

i am going to say his name but he did reimburse my paypal acct and i want to make sure the money is in the bank before this guy has a chance to give me any more problems. Once i have that, i will spill it. it’s not out of respect since i don’t have any left for him. he is only paying me for the cost of buying her and shiping her which was $150. The Entire Vet Bill is on me. And if i had chosen to euth her, the vet bill for a new patient would still have been $210. So either way i lost and I didn’t see a need to kill Ilene.

Cloudie and Callie i put it all on my CC and i’m using the gofundme site to help pay it off.

Maybe the seller thought the type of turtle was 3 legged, not 3 toed, so she thought it was fine…
Sorry, couldn’t help see the irony in breed name. I’m sorry about your little Tortuga. Hope she recovers. Shame on the seller.

Some amphibians can regenerate missing parts. Would a turtle of your species be able to regenerate another leg? Can she get around?

Seems like it would be easy to use a 3d printer to make a prosthetic leg…

No, Turtles do not regenerate legs. she had to have an amputation b/c the bone was sticking out and when they did the surgery, the bone was dying. She could have died if i had not taken her in. Turtles are Reptiles, not amphibians.

that would just be an annoyance. she can get around just fine, and she will be able to hibernate, which means digging a few feet down. The only thing she cannot do now is bury her eggs if she has any. Box turtles can store egs for up to 4 years so if she was ever with a male, she could still lay eggs. but if she cannot bury them, they probably will be eaten by the other turtles.

What a horrifying injury! Little Ilene must have been in unbearable pain for quite awhile. Poor little girl!

Depending on where you bought the turtle from, there may very well be some state laws laying responsibility for the bill on the hands of the seller. And it sounds as though there’s probably some health certificate paperwork missing here.

I gave what I could. Thank you for helping her. Poor little turtle.

no paperwork is necessary. at least not for Pennsylvania.

Have you heard of the Fauna Board of Inquiry? It’s been a staple of the reptile community for longer than I can recall. I would take this there - if you haven’t already.

Glad you’re doing what you can for your wee turt…Box Turtles were my first ever pets, as a tiny sprat myself. They hold a special place.

yes i have and i might do that.

Ilene ate 2 worms last night, which is great. she had been too stressed before. She seems to be doing well, but it is a slow healing process. she sees the vet tomorrow for a follow up.
