My old horse cannot chew

Demodex mites can cause hair loss.
Is he itchy?

no he is not

One horse here was diagnosed with EOTRH but given 1) his age, (close to 30) 2) the fact that his owner has no spare funds and, critically, 3) he showed no sign of pain, was eating well, and in good weight, we opted to watch and wait. Luckily, a year later, and after a recheck, he is much improved, and the idea of surgery is off the table.

I am not advocating any particular course of action, just sharing that sometimes it is possible to not do the surgery.

Horses with few teeth here usually get soaked TC Senior, or soaked Ultium if they need more calories, as well as soaked hay cubes here.

His appetite is good. He is a big horse and requires a large amount of soaked food. His hair is growing back.

My almost-31-year-old this year started to not really eat his hay. However, when I put a flake of alfalfa out for him, he gobbles that up still. I’m not sure why he suddenly went off the grass hay, but I’m happy he’ll eat the alfalfa. He does have a tooth that needs to come out, though. I just need to schedule an appointment.

Purina Wel-gel - it is what they use nasally in the clinic - I use it as a top dress and soak the grain - let it sit a minute and add more water - so he can drink it - works great on my older horses

Agree, I’ve used it on ancient very hard keepers (also as a top dressing). Works incredibly well.
