Oh, okay! Lol.
Okay I also wasn’t too far off there was a mythical Epona who was a horse goddess: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epona
This, for the non-gamers, is the virtual horse I was thinking of:
This whole discussion about Epona is also reminding me I seriously need to go play Zelda Breath of the Wild on Switch which has been a great game so far but which I never get around to. So many games, so little time
Great illustration … and yet …
Epona - another fictional equine helping humans conflate fantasy with what it will be like to ride a real horse …
It’s going to be just like that wonderful illustration. (Except the bridle and bit are configured wrong and the rider is holding on by the reins. But who’s counting.)
I noticed the bit was backwards (assuming it’s meant to be a D-ring) and am like, “I don’t even know I’ve ever seen the character appear in game w/a visible bit.”
I mean yeah obv. it isn’t realistic, it’s a game I remember playing one game in my teen years where Link (sword-wielding dude, yes the game is called Legend of Zelda, Zelda is the princess and in some of the games she’s not the typical “damsel in distress.” She literally runs a pirate ship in Wind Waker.) basically mounts the horse by leapfrogging on from the back and then backflipped off…I think. It’s been a while since I’ve played that specific Zelda game (Twilight Princess). And the horses really aren’t the main component or even figure in all the games. I believe Epona was first introduced to players in Ocarina of Time and she’s in that and Twilight Princess (possibly also in Majora’s Mask but IDK for sure). Breath of the Wild has horses but they’re not Epona specifically.
EDIT: Looking at the illustration again is there even enough bridle there for it to be configured wrong? Looks like that one’s drawn as one single piece of leather with a buckle for the throat latch.
Speaking of video game horses, they really did a good job with them in Red Dead Redemption 2. My son used to play, and they gave breeds and stats when you got a new one, they trotted and cantered with their feet going in the right order, and overall looked pretty realistic. Someone did their research.
And you get points for bonding with your horse! You also have to feed and water it.
Do it. I’m NOT a gamer but I absolutely loved BOTW.
I’ve always heard good things about the Red Dead Redemption games generally but have never gotten around to them, I’m mainly a console gamer moreso Nintendo so yeah.
I did just get Stardew Valley (not horsey) on PC the other day so my PC gaming horizons are expanding a little. Between it, Planet Zoo (which I don’t play much b/c the controls are frustrating and I don’t wanna reconfigure those yet), Cities Skylines (which I go in cycles with) and Sims 3 (ditto cycles), I might be a burgeoning PC game person…though I’ve had Sims 3 in some form since release in like, '09 so not like it’s the latest lol.
Deleted because my comment was completely off piste
In this thread ‘off piste’ and ‘on piste’ are the same thing.
I wrote a novel on here last night and went on a bit of a tangent. Then this morning I read back through it and went 'omg Liz, there’s absolutely no point in all of that nonsense"… I deleted it.
I read most of it last night. I can appreciate a good ramble!
I actually sent a rambling text to the friend this whole thing started about about the same time you posted, so I can relate.
I think my husband plays one of those games for his Playstation and I was impressed with the horses too. Not really my kind of game, but he would get me to “test ride” the pony whenever he got a new one
