Neck Strap Options
Neck straps are legal for ALL phases. I use a racing yoke for dressage, and attach martingale as needed.
As in breastplate which is attached to the saddle and/or girth? http://www.bitofbritain.com/Breastplates_s/190.htm
Legal for all phases

Different from the OP’s question of a strap (normally leather) around the horse’s neck (NOT attached to saddle or girth) to steady the rider while jumping.

Also some use short strap in front of the saddle, connected to the d’s, in case their horse decides to go for a buck or bounce or fart/dart - this is also legal.

I just use a regular yoke, not attached to the saddle. I have it somewhat loose, but I don’t want it TOO loose. Breastplates that attach to the saddle really aren’t that helpful, IMO, they are too low. I use a separate breastcollar, attached to the dees only.

kids stirrup leathers. thinner than regular stirrup leathers, shorter (so no extra crap flapping around to contain), adjustable, and cheap as all get out at the used tack shop.
I just use duct tape so the extra crap doesn’t flop around. I guess I could dress it up a bit and use electrical tape…ooooh I could use some coloured tape also!

My horse broke a pair of flat leather reins (the hook snapped) so, I put the rein loop through the middle buckle loop and secured with duct tape - works pretty well for me

But I haven’t used it in competition yet, but I’ll try it out in my lesson on Sunday

I found a nice one for about 11 GBP (17 U.S.) incl. shipping:

My neck strap is a good looking black rope and black leather with buckle closure designed and sold by Linda Tellington-Jonesat her website, www.TTouch.com. She calls it the “Balance Rein” it currently sells for $44.95. They have a cheaper all rope version in med dark blue for $21.95. I have both models which I always have with me whenever I ride. I always have one for me, and I always have a loaner, or a spare. There’s a Youtube video that helps you make one yourself: “3 DIY neck ropes for tackless\bareback riding”. Be sure to use good quality 1\2 inch diameter yacht line or climbing rope for safety reasons…a piece of string won’t save you if and when the unexpected happens.
