Need easy/cheap ways to add a window/gossip gate/grill between sold stall walls

This looks like you could just cut the right sized hole and kind of slap it on?

Will you need one on both sides of opening? Though I suppose that would be over kill having two sets of bars. Is there a simple frame the same size to support the wood and cover the edges on the other side?

Ask your handy man what he thinks since you will need something to support the boards you cut.

I was thinking he could do chew guard on the other side (though Stoney won’t bother it, he’s too angelic.)

I called Ramm and they’re going to recommend a local handyman who uses Ramm products and call me back to discuss.

I should mention that my current handyman is wonderful but doesn’t speak much English or read super well so I’d like to have in mind what I want and present it to him rather than brainstorm ideas with him.

Since you’ve got Classic Equine stalls, what about getting one of their partial (or whole) grilled partitions? I’d think handy guy could probably cut the strap down to the desired height (if you needed him to) and then use the removed boards (cut down) to fill in if you only wanted a partial divider. http://www.classic-equine.com/posts/stall-partitions/ - check out the second image in the slide show “Half grill partition with horizontal wood fill and divider” - would that do the trick?
Or, since you’re talking to the folks at Ramm, what about one of their grill sections? http://www.rammfence.com/horse-stalls/horse-stall-accessories/grill-sections
Both of those would require a little bit of de-construction, but it shouldn’t be too dramatic.

Do you need to have a physical divider (like a grill) between the horses at all? Could you just ask handy guy to cut out a section from the front or back of the divider and then tack flashing/chew guards over the cut edges? (Might not work if you have to lock them up separately and somebody is an a-hole and sticks his head through to antagonize his neighbor, though…)

I was thinking along the same lines as bdj, that you might be able to just make the wall shorter. If they get along, maybe just removing some of the top boards would be enough so they can see each other by raising their heads, or touch noses over the top. You would need that center metal brace/strap thing cut down, but that would be a quick and easy solution.

The Ramm window would also work well, I think, if cutting the hole for it out of the wall didn’t compromise the structure at all - but if it were me, I would be inclined to get it in black to match your other components.

What happened to the windows you were trying to sell a while back? Would one of those work if you still have them? I think I remember they might be too big for this use, but not sure…and moot point if they sold.

Ramm sells that window grill in black, which I would get to match. The CE ones are lovely but more pricey and CE did not have a local installer to recommend. Ramm does.

The windows (which I still have) are HUGE and really 3D and allow the horse to stick his next through. I am comfortable with horses seeing and touching noses between stalls. I am not comfortable with horse physically putting their head through to another stall. Shane would find a way to Marie Antoinette himself and Stoney deserves some peace

I wish the windows I had would work. I have them! But I think they’re way way too big, to thick, and would allow through wall head shoving which I don’t want. But good idea!

Update… Ramm was wonderful and identified a perfect product (a small grille, not the window) and I was waiting to hear back from a contractor they identified in my area who had installed that product before…

And then my awesome barn helper guy came out today and matted my remaining 3 stalls (he matted 2 side by side for me to bring the horses home initially). I tried Shane across from Stoney, and that seemed to satisfy him. That is not my preferred setup, and it means I have to keep 3 stalls bedded-- but it also means (1) I don’t need to cut a window between my stalls; and (2) even if I did, I don’t need to do it IMMEDIATELY. And I am really happy.

Go here to check out all the options available. I put in “windows” in the solid outside stall walls of my barn. Easy peezy… with my son doing all the work!!

How about fitting a stable mirror?

Sounds like the ideal solution, and if there is a 3rd horse for Idiot to see when Non-Idiot goes out, that might work too!

Spaces between the boards will not be sufficient, really it won’t. You horse wants to really see his buddy. If it were me I would contact the stall mfgr and buy from them a long grill that will run the entire length of that wall. Have the wall taken back down to about the 4 ft height and mount the lovely wall length grill above it. It will look great and calm your daimbramaged horse. There are lots of horses just like him. My boarder horse panics when my horse goes out of his sight.
