Need hay bag recommendations

I use NibbleNets, too – but only for one meal. I like them alot, easy to fill, but with only one meal, I can’t attest to their long term durability.

I like the idea of using a slow-feeder bag on the ground, or a hay ball, or the one the OP posted – but my guys have front shoes, so I worry they might get caught.

I also tried a Hay Pillow, as I like the idea of eating from the ground, in a more natural position. But the zipper was a pain to deal with. Zipper teeth and hay don’t really play well together, IME.

If you have room, just buy a water trough, put some holes in the sides towards the bottom, add twine as a loop, and clip your hay net inside the trough. Works perfectly!

I just bought the large derby originals natural grazer and I love it. I can fit probably 2/3 of a bale in it, it’s super easy to tie and just throw in the stall. Mine aren’t shod so I wanted to try something on the ground and this works absolutely perfect.

For hay nets, I always preferred the weaver ones. They hold up great and I find them very easy to fill.

Thanks everyone for some great suggestions. I went to the local Tractor Supply and ended up buying Weaver slow feed hay nets. I would have preferred the Shire’s net, but they only had it in the largest size. I like the idea of a hay bag better than a net mainly because it looks like it would be easier to fill, but I decided to start with a hay net instead simply because of the price difference. The prices on those bags make me swoon, but if they hold up better over the long run they may be worth it.

Another reason I started with the cheap nets is that I need to decide whether the horses need a 1" or 2" hole. I bought the 2" size, but if they still eat the hay too fast it won’t cost too much to go to the 1" size.

I wish I could still get the bluestem hay they used to eat. It was nutritious but not so tasty that they ate it too fast. There was always a little left in the morning, so I knew they had hay available all night.
