Need help with leading, horse scares me!

Haha, you’re right! There’s NO way I could stop her if she took off! I guess my reasoning was that I could chase after her and grab it easier if it were longer

But that would also be more dangerous for her if she got caught up in it! I went ahead and ordered a 10ft lead rope, like the ones CA has.

I went out today and worked with her in keeping her focused on me like y’all suggested and she did really well!! Little improvement’s like this will help me get my confidence back with her in no time, I’m sure!

A good article to help understand horse behaviour and how to manage it, http://partridgehorsehill.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Red-Yellow-Green.pdf

Have you worked with OTTBs straight off the track before?

I strongly suggest listening to the Major League eventing podcast on OTTBs also.

I have 3 OtTBs and I had the same situation with my 19-yr old (now) gelding when he first came. A rope halter with the knotted noseband is the only thing he respected. He’s a pretty insecure horse by nature. But 2 of the 3 like being in my space and I agree—something to pop them with or even a sharp poke of the finger into the chest is helpful. I schooled the older horse over and over about staying behind me when we walked, not getting ahead, etc. and I do with the younger 2 when they need it. But they are just more respectful—great training barn!!— and rarely need it.
