Neighbor peering around my property with a drone

The sheriff messaged that I would be “within my rights” to knock it down if it were say within reach of a broom and looking through a window but that I don’t own all the airspace over my land (obviously) which leaves a heck of a lot of grey area between annoying neighbors and legal aviation. If it’s hovering 15 feet off the ground in my pasture not looking in a window do I just have to live with it? If it has a really great zoom lens and films me from 30 feet up…what then? It was unclear to me how high the drone could be before I went from being “within my rights” to being the one in the wrong. Also, I don’t think I would have much recourse if the thing wasn’t filming into buildings and I can’t prove it’s filming except it seems to react to me cursing it to Hades. Does taunting my dogs count as harassment? The drone owner is probably having a beer and a laugh and I’m over here reading case law. Bah.

Then hold it hostage, get your own remote to use it and go spy on the neighbour, and explode it ! Anonymously of course.

Time to set up a Punkin Chunker and practice firing it. Too bad if it intersects his drone’s flight path.

When I have a full can of wasp spray, with a favorable wind I can spray it about 30 feet or so. I bet that would irritate the motor and fan intakes. It might even make it fall down.

Does the FAA require drone registration now? Yes, the FAA does! Here are the registration rules, the fines for not registering, and the laws for operation are attached: https://www.faa.gov/UAS/registration/faqs/

Oh boy. I’d be seriously angry if any of my neighbors flew one of those things over my place or at me.

I love the idea of a bazooka. Is it close enough to nap with a fishing net if you fling it?

Wasp spray - that IS great idea.

A good longe whip or hunting whip might b useful.

FWIW, I’d be careful of doing anything that might damage/destroy it (as tempting as it would be) as you might be pursued to recover damages to personal property.

As well, one of the prime gun safety rules is know your target and what is beyond it and that’s a bit hard to do when you are shooting up in the air at anything. That bullet will come down someplace and you don’t know where…

And yes, I get the annoyance level and would be looking at every non-destructive option I could. If you can snare it and have a heart to heart with the owner in lieu of returning their property, I’d like that

Is there a pond for wayward drones you could take it to, maybe a back room in the sheriff’s office, where the owner has to go claim it?

In line with wasp spray, i would also look into bear mace, that stuff is so nasty and potent i am sure it would mess up the engine and fans on that drone pretty stinking fast!!! Plus it really has a good range!!

As for figuring out who owns it…they must have a live feedback on the camera. I pulled out my phone to snap a picture and it took off like a shot. By the time I put the dogs up I couldn’t even hear it. Hopefully, they now understand they are making me angry.
They absolutely have a live camera. It may not be recording, but if it is being flown out of their sightline, they have to have it on or they won’t be able to see where they are going. Some drones have options to fly via GPS, too, but this doesn’t sound like that.

I second knocking it out of the air with water - a hose, a pressure washer, a SuperSoaker or some other high-power water gun. The rotors on most of them don’t do well when wet; unless it’s waterproof, you can probably drop it right onto your own property, and see if anyone comes crying. Even if it limps away, just getting it wet should damage the camera and other electronics and make the jerk think twice.

That’s why you use a shotgun. Well, that and a moving drone would be tough (for most of us) to hit with a bullet.

Fling a shovel full of wet manure at it. If they aren’t horse people maybe it’ll gross them out.

People are getting crazier and creepier by the day

A couple of guys hereabouts shot a drone out of the air that was above their property, and got cited for it. Airspace is not owned by the landowner. YMMV I guess depending on where you live…

What would happen if you got a “drone of your own” and they just “happened” to collide in mid-air?.. Of course, there’s the issue of spending your money to protect your privacy, and I totally understand that. It could be amusing when filmed from the ground though…

I used to shoot trappe, and I was pretty damn fine at it. This sounds like a great opportunity to load up. It is a SSS situation, if ever I’ve heard of one. Let them prove where the thing was, when it disappeared. I’m guessing it flies low enough to be a danger to your livestock, in any event.

Use a 410 shot gun!! Good spray of shot…I call mine a “vaporizer”!!

I think if you shoot it, you pay for it. I would try to figure out who it is and apply for a TRO.

OK, remember way back when, we would wet toilet paper in school and throw it hard onto the 12 foot ceilings and watch it stick???

 1. Super soaker, or hose with powerful nozzle, or power washer.

 2. I think I recently read somewhere about falcons that were trained to take out drones. Might be kinda like hard work, but what fun!
I wouldn’t shoot it. That action went badly for a family a year or so ago. I’d squirt it with the water hose…or a power washer. Nothing even remotely illegal about that.
Are you sure?

I haven’t read these in detail but they address some of the issues.

If I had the problem I’d get my own drone and engage in count-surveillance.

I was listening to some broadcast or other that mentioned a possible precedent (?) for some restriction based on an old case in which low flying aircraft scared some farmer’s chickens to death. But that may have to do with the drone causing actual damage?
