Nervous over tiny jumps

Yep! He does.

I will keep working on it. He is starting to settle down as the ride goes on which I think is good. We will just keep chipping away at it. I’m hoping for my own jumping saddle by the end of January.

I have this exact horse. A 4 year old QH

We do a lot of trotting into things and working on my own confidence so I ride effectively with a good outside rein half halt. He still gets excited but we are teaching him with placing poles and gymnastics to shorten up a bit and not rocket me through courses. Sometimes it doesn’t go to plan and we just come back to trot. Sometimes he gets training rides. And sometimes I yell “holy Poop” at a long distance. Every lesson is slowly getting better and better though. I have had him 14 months and our partnership has really blossomed in the last month to no longer feeling nervous.

Here is him doing a 3 strides in a 4 stride. https://www.tiktok.com/@foxinsocksqh/video/6994439682914323718?is_copy_url=1&is_from_webapp=v1&lang=en&q=foxinsocksqh&t=1640803649396

There is also one of me being walked out of the arena when I first got him LOL.

It just takes time and honestly the keen ones become easier and safer to jump long term.

Ha ha yes! You are further along than us! He’s only been doing any jumping since the beginning of December. And I’m truly a Dressage rider trying to play in the jump ring.

You guys look awesome.

While there are a LOT of problems with George Morris as a person, I did learn some useful points when I took a clinic with him some 20 years ago. One there thing I learned there (and that I have subsequently learned from other successful trainers) was the importance of teaching the horse to trot and canter, calmly and smoothly, over a single rail on the ground, without speeding up, leaping, or jumping. Since the horse ISN’T leaping, you can do it in any saddle.

With one horse I had to do that exercise every day for WEEKS before she would consistently do it without leaping.

Thank you!

I came from 11 years of AQHA HUS. Then I switched barns, switched to an eventing coach, and bought him. It’s been a whirlwind but is really is starting to get FUN!

Yes we’ve been doing a lot of poles and he was really relaxed with them until we introduced the jumping. Now I just think he’s not sure, especially at first when it’s going to be a little bit of a jump.

I will definitely continue on with lots of pole work!
