Biggest hugs. Having had a horse with not just one, but two things found on necropsy that are almost completely unheard of in horses, you have all my empathy. I’m so glad you found something to explain the strange behavior, and please don’t ever doubt you did 150% right by Jasper.
Hi,
Just a quick update to say we still don’t have results from the necropsy yet. Jasper continues to be a mystery in the afterlife.
Hopefully next week I will have more info.
thanks for keeping us in the loop!
it is highly likely that most of the information is going to come from pathology and possible other testing that will take time. unless there was some stupendously obvious lesion or pathology, most doctors will wait until all the chapters of the story are completed.
Again this is a most remarkable story of compassion and horsemanship.
Thank you for sharing. The waiting is hard but I am guessing there wasn’t something obvious that explained the root cause. My vet said they are probably doing some special stains. I am glad they are being thorough.
The histology portion can take a very long time depending on time of year and how busy they are. It was 10+ weeks until we got the final results for mine - it was end of academic year and they reviewed multiple samples of everything from brain through GI and associated organs.
Hugs for you. Sorry for your loss.
I was just reading an article online about a barrel horse, who was determined to have the first documented equine case of Chagas Syndrome, post mortum of course. Most people don’t do a necropsy so it’s possible that there’s been more cases, but folks didn’t go the extra mile to find out what it was.
This is the article I read and this is one from Equus.
Might not have a thing to do with your case, but it was timely that I read this last night and then read your thread today.
Oh goodness. Had no idea it could take that long. Thanks for sharing.
This is a fascinating article. I will have to share it with my vet. Thank you for thinking of me and posting it.
Hopefully yours will be much faster than mine!
Hi.
The necropsy hasn’t found anything. Pathology came back negative. pnf-h for EDM negative.
My vet is not giving up yet. He is going to send some slides to another pathologist with some specific questions. He said it is a long shot.
I knew not getting an answer was a possibility. I also know something was wrong with my poor horse. Not finding a “cause” confirms for me that it wasn’t some thing simple I could have fixed.
I have started looking at horses and have tried a few. Going to see one for a second ride next week and bringing a trainer with me. He has potential.
Laura
Good luck Laura on your test ride. I’m hoping you have many happy rides ahead of you. You’ve earned them after what you’ve been though. Hugs!
I hope this realization gives you a final sense of peace. Poor Jasper just was a hard luck case. But he was so lucky to have found you as his final caretaker.
Hoping you find the perfect horse that you can enjoy for many years!
You deserve the nicest, kindest horse and I"m sure Jasper will help send him to you.
At least you got this information, and it is some explanation as to his problems. Even if you dont know why or how, its something.
Now I’m not a horse, but have multiple lumbar issues in my own back. Age here is a factor, but not sure where the rest came from. Maybe injury, maybe genetics who knows. But at least I know the WHAT and manage from there.
The pathologist thought that the swelling around the lumbar meninges occurred as a result of my vet trying to do a spinal tap in that area, vs. there being an issue in that area.
Our current scientific methods may not be advanced enough to determine what was making jasper unhappy, but he was unhappy and you gave him the gift of release. I hope your vets additional inquiries find something.
I hope you find a great horse.
Oh. Well so much for my theory. Another poster here wishing for luck in the horse shopping.
