neutering kittens

Of course you should wait, it’s too early … it’s a terrible deed of the vet

Six months too early? He will be spraying and looking for a girl soon!

6-8 months seems pretty late to me. The 2 pound rule is what I’m most familiar with (caveat: not a vet yet). We just spayed & neutered a bunch of cats here and most of them were about 16 weeks.

I’ve had all my male cats done around 6 months. I don’t agree with juvenile spay/neuter. The one cat I have that was neutered at 8 weeks is obese and has had issues with urinary tract infection. Not so with those done later.

I don’t agree with spaying or neutering early either. It’s not so much the age for neutering it’s their weight, which I believe should be at least 4lbs. Spaying should wait until at least 8 months, if there are no un-neutered males around why rush it?

I recently had my two male kittens neutered and I thought they were around 6 1/2-7 months old, turned out they were only around 5 months but both were large enough and almost 10lbs each. One had just started to spray which is why I booked their surgeries. I’ve had other males that I’ve waited until they were 7-8 months, it depends on the individual cat and their behaviours.

I’ve never heard of a male kitten that is sexually mature enough to start spraying when they were 2lbs.

My male was neutered around 14-16 week time frame. He was/is fine. He came from a shelter, and they wanted to neuter him sooner, but he was battling a respiratory infection they they wanted to make sure was 100% sorted out first. I had another male that was neutered late. His age was estimated to be around 5 years. He was a stray, but adapted well to house cat life. No spraying. No issues. I think I was quite lucky with him.

As for feeding, my cats (2) have 2 auto feeders. They dispense dry food at 5:00AM, 11:00AM, and 4:00PM. So they get 3 small dry meals. One eats at one feeder, and the other at another. Or sometimes they share. Either way, no one is too fat or too skinny so it works for them. They also do not look to me for food. Except for their 8:00PM feeding of wet food. They’re not terrible about it, but do bat each other around a little bit in the kitchen while I’m preparing.

The auto feeders are nice! They both have healthy weights, and small meals throughout the day is supposed to be good for them. All I do is clean the “bowl portion” as needed, and refill. They hear the feeder dispense and come running. I’m not involved.
