New Charles Owen MS1 Pro Review (aka the newly released MIPS skull cap) UPDATE Post #29: Helmet likely defective

NO!!! Off to find one! Thank you so much for this! I just ordered my size at Riding Warehouse for $119, free shipping. Whew! I have 2 I school in and can keep the new one for show. Past that I don’t know what I’m going to do. Everyones version of a long oval doesn’t really fit.

Not to try to be a stickler, but i’m going to be-MIPS is designed to reduce the force the brain is subject to. It doesn’t claim to prevent concussions.

@punchy I would point out that a few things are at play here.

The marketing guidelines for the sales of anything in the free marketplace and not being able to promise more than you can return. So no they can’t claim to reduce all concussion, but the product does reduce concussions.

A MIPS helmet absolutely can reduce the concussion probabilities…in many falls. BUT not all falls. Nothing will help if you head literally is squished under a force with a lot of oomph. So you can’t say that you will 100%.

The doctors I worked with in my rehab and my neurologist all agree that MIPS does reduce the likelihood of concussions with how it works. WaveCel technology does this as well in various Bicycle helmets and football helmets. BUT again, if an 18 wheeler runs over your head or a linebacker smushed you into the ground on your head… you can’t promise what it will do in the most extreme situations.

That said how people interpret the safety of these helmets are clear. They are recognized at reducing concussions in many of the ‘typical’ uses/falls.

From: https://www.cheshirehorse.com/blog/2019/07/an-introduction-to-mips-equestrian-helmet-technology/

“In addition to our inventory of ATSM-SEI certified helmets, we now also carry helmets with MIPS safety technology to offer another layer of protection against concussions and traumatic brain injuries (TBIs).”

For those that may not have seen the videos I posted here is the explanation video for what MIPS actually does and why it matters to your brain.

I bought one earlier this year, and I’m wondering where you can get a cover that fits? They didn’t have one when I bought it, and my old skull cap cover really doesn’t fit. I’d love to hear what you all have found.

Bit of Britain used to sell custom helmet covers. Also look at helmetcovers.com.

@notlost - I bought this helmet as an upgrade for my husband from the CO Pro II. The basic Pro II cover fits it. I literally just moved it from old helmet to new for him.

Thanks for the review of the CO MIPS. I also bought one on National Helmet Awareness day in the same size as my CO helmet, 7 1/8. When it finally came in from being on back order, it was too large. Oddly, this was the SAME problem my Trauma Void MIPS helmet has, which is why I was trying the CO! I bought a beautiful blue Trauma Void Helmet with the salesperson at the local tack shop fitting me for it. The first time I wore it on XC at a show, I felt it catch air as I went over a jump! Scary, for sure! I tightened the chin strap, as tight as possible, but honestly, the helmet never fit right. The chin strap goes up and over my chin as a ride, which renders the helmet useless.
I sent the CO back for a size 7 and hope that the skull cap fits, as I am a big fan of the MIPS technology! (Got it from Dover for $150.)
